Software Test Engineer

The Test Engineer is responsible for providing system-level test expertise throughout all phases of system testing. Testing activities will support multiple product lines including CT Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) handheld chemical detection systems and airport checkpoint lane solutions. Responsibilities include requirements analysis test strategy and test plan development manual and automated test case design test execution defect tracking test reporting and field deployment support. The role will also involve identifying opportunities to reduce manual testing efforts and implementing automated solutions for regression integration and system-level testing. The engineer will mentor junior team members promote testing best practices and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate is an accomplished Software Quality Assurance (SQA) professional with a strong commitment to quality a passion for learning new technologies and experience with test automation tools scripting languages and automated testing frameworks. The candidate should be capable of delivering reliable business-critical solutions while helping the organization achieve its quality and operational objectives.

Essential functions:

• Work with the program/project managers and functional managers to understand the testing effort by analyzing the requirements of software projects
• Identify test cases use cases and write and execute test plans in support of those projects.
• Thoroughly document test results.
• Provide when needed support for Service and Operations organizations. Support field upgrades as required
• Mentor and support less experienced test engineers
• Team lead approach on project basis and represent test team in technical discussions.
• Support automation goals as needed. Provide detailed flowcharts/requirements to the automation group for automation of identified test-cases
• Understand our infrastructure and the inefficiencies of current processes and figure out ways to automate them.
• Propose develop requirements prototype and execute new implementations in collaboration with other software engineers and architects.
• Understanding of fundamental design principles behind a scalable application.
• Incorporate feedback submitted by other software engineers on the server/switch/router configurations.
• Implement regression frameworks and tools.
• Collaborate with various programming and test groups to execute standard software activities including design development test and documentation.
• Effectively communicate coding activities and findings in oral and written formats
• Ensure adherence to test processes standards and safety protocols in the lab/floor.

Education and Experience

Required/Preferred:  Strong fundamentals in SQA.

• Experience with Version Control Systems (such as SVN and GIT) and Bug tracking systems like JIRA. Test management tools like Testrails
• Strong hands-on experience with Linux/Windows system software.
• Willing to work with CT systems swapping physical parts pushing bags and software testing.
• Proven history of working with teams inside and outside engineering in a collaborative and productive fashion.
• Ability to work independently on tight deadlines in a resource constrained environment
• Knowledge of software scripting languages (Python) and test software languages (C and/ or C) a plus.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Willing to travel in the field to support development and customers

Years of Experience:

5 years of experience testing SW with a proven track record of releasing quality SW.

Education Level:

BS or equivalent degree in Computer Science Information Technology or other relevant discipline.

Additional Qualifications:  

Must be 18 years or older

Available on-site in Edgewood Maryland Smiths Detection Facility.

Must be willing to take a drug test as part of the selection process

Must be willing to submit to and cooperate with a background investigation (corporate and/ or government) as part of the selection process and continued employment is dependent upon maintaining a current approved (passed) background investigation

The total compensation for this position ranges from $147061 - $176473/yr (Salary to be determined by the education experience knowledge skills & abilities of the applicant and the alignment with the internal team & market data).
