About the Senior Minister

The Minister at El Portal Church of Christ is expected to possess a deep understanding of the Scriptures and demonstrate the ability to preach teach and equip the congregation for discipleship and service. This role requires a committed disciple of Jesus passionate about guiding others in their spiritual growth and encouraging them to become disciples who in turn disciple others. The Minister should exemplify a fervent faith in God unwavering dedication to the Lordship of Christ openness to the leading of the Spirit and adherence to the authority of Scripture. Serving under the oversight of the elders and as an integral member of the ministry team the Minister will actively support and advance the Churchs vision and mission.

The Senior Ministers responsibilities include:

Responsibilities

Pulpit Preaching

  • Prepare and deliver sermons that are scripturally sound relevant and inspiring to the congregation.
  • Lead many Sunday services while collaborating with other minister(s) and guest speakers to share preaching responsibilities.

Teaching

  • Teach Bible classes as assigned by Church leadership.
  • Edifying classes are designed to encourage spiritual growth and maturity among Church members by fostering meaningful discussion teaching biblical principles and supporting personal reflection.

Discipleship Evangelism and Community Outreach

  • Lead by example and train Church members to actively disciple others.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of outreach initiatives within the community.
  • Engage members in activities that serve the community and foster evangelistic opportunities.

Family Care

  • Assist in coordinating and visiting those who are sick or unable to attend services.
  • Provide spiritual guidance and counseling to members and others regarding their spiritual well-being referring complex cases to qualified Christian professionals as needed.
  • Officiate and conduct weddings funerals and other special events as requested.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Serve as the staff team leader coordinating office activities and ensuring the Church operates efficiently as a service center.
  • Participate actively in meetings with elders and staff to promote effective communication and coordination of objectives and activities.
  • Prepare bulletin articles according to schedule and ensure the publication maintains a high standard of quality.
  • Maintain agreed-upon office hours coordinate with staff during absences and remain available when necessary including on days off.

The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate for the Senior Minister:

Education and Experience

  • Preferred Hold a four-year bachelors degree or graduate degree from a Christian university or school of preaching.
  • Have specialized training in Biblical studies Christian ministry and preaching.
  • Demonstrate proven ministry experience with at least ten years of preaching.
  • Possess significant experience in discipleship and evangelism.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Minister:The minister must have the ability to walk alongside others show hospitalitywho is deeply involved with the people.
  • Teacher/Preacher:He must be a capable communicator who can preach through books of the Bible to grow the congregations knowledge and is also expected to raise up other teachers.
  • Leader/Visionary:He should have the ability to implement a vision lead the church toward growth and mentor others in ministry leadership roles.
  • Administrator/Manager:Minister still needs to manage administrative tasks and supervise staff.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Approachable and able to build constructive positive relationships; uses diplomacy and tact especially in tense situations; has a demeanor that puts others at ease.
  • Biblical Knowledge: Proficient in understanding the Bible and applying biblical principles to contemporary culture.
  • Communication: Effectively conveys information and ideas through various media engaging and helping the audience comprehend and remember messages.
  • Collaboration: Works cooperatively with others maintaining relationships with humility.
  • Continuous Learning and Development: Demonstrates a strong desire for personal growth and regularly seeks learning opportunities through study courses conferences and consultation with elders and fellow ministers.
  • Leadership: Acts as an effective servant leader modeling the Churchs vision and motivating others to support and act in alignment with that vision.
  • Planning and Organizing: Develops plans to ensure efficient completion of work prioritizes tasks manages schedules and maintains focus and follow-through.
  • Work Standards: Sets and upholds high standards for excellence and quality assumes responsibility and accountability for achieving tasks and objectives and demonstrates initiative beyond routine requirements.
