TheSecurity ScreeningOfficer serves as a vital member of theSafety and Security team acting as the first line of defense and initial point of contact for museum roleis responsible forensuringthe safetyand security of all guests staff volunteers and cultural artifacts by preventing the introduction of prohibited items and weapons into the facility.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond professionally to OpenGate system alarms and indicators.
- Document and report security incidents suspicious activity and screening results as required.
- Escalate critical threats and non-cooperative visitors to Security Leadership.
- Assist with emergency medical fire and other emergency responses as staffing and operational needs permit.
- Support crowd management activities during special events emergencies and high-volume visitation periods.
- Maintain a professional appearance and provide positive customer service while interacting with guests and staff.
- Comply with all security policies procedures training requirements and safety standards.
Essential Functions
- Operate Weapons Detection Systems
- Monitor visitor flow through the OpenGate weapons detection system at designated public entrances.
- Observe system alerts and indicators and take appropriate action in accordance with established procedures.
- Perform secondary screening using handheld metal detection devices when required by OpenGate system alerts.
- Follow established security protocols to identify and resolve potential threats.
- Conduct visual and manual inspections of backpacks purses packages and other personal items when secondary screening is required.
- Ensure inspections are performed professionally and in accordance with security procedures.
- Deny entry to prohibited items and non-compliant individuals in accordance with organizational policies.
- Identify and report security concerns and escalate threats to Security Leadership as appropriate.
- Maintain orderly visitor entry operations and ensure safe efficient movement through screening checkpoints.
- Provide assistance to visitors requiring accommodations including ADA-related needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education
High school diploma or GEDrequired.
Required Experience
- Previousdispatching emergency communications security operations law enforcement public safety transportation coordination or surveillance monitoring experience preferred.
- Experience in high-volume public venues is highlypreferred
- Highly observant security-focused mindset with exceptional welcomingcustomer service
- Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to de-escalate tense situations with diplomacy patience and authority
Physical & Work Requirements
This position has the following special requirements:
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods at entrance check points
- Frequent bending reaching and lifting of bags and packages
- Ability tomaintainfocus and alertness in a busy high-stimulus environment with constant public interaction.
- Work Schedule may include weekends evenings and holidays to align with museum operating hours andspecial events
