The Department of Local Services is looking for a dedicated hardworking Road Maintenance Worker to become part of our this role you will perform a wide variety of skilled tasks related to roadway construction repair and maintenance. This work involves ensuring the safety of crews and the traveling public by providing proper traffic control measures operating vehicles and equipment performing roadway repairs and seasonal tasks such as snow and ice removal. Job Duties

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in construction road maintenance or other heavy manual labor areas OR completion of a recognized vocational trades program.
  • Possess traffic control knowledge and familiarity with setting up traffic control measures on streets and highways.
  • Are skilled in performing minor construction and repairs on drainage infrastructure (pipes manholes catch basins culverts etc.).
  • Possess strong knowledge and practical experience in the safe operation of a wide range of hand tools and equipment commonly used in construction road maintenance and other physically demanding labor-intensive environments.
  • Understands and follows safety protocols and regulations related to construction and road maintenance including fall protection confined space entry and the handling of hazardous materials.
  • Have the ability to read and interpret maps (e.g. Thomas Brothers or similar) and apply basic geographic orientation.
  • Possess strong communication skills and the ability to effectively follow both verbal and written instructions. Capable of working outdoors in varying weather including harsh or inclement conditions.
  • Demonstrates behaviors that include fairness respect and inclusiveness.
  • Have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and providing excellent customer service. Is a team player and understands the value of working together and being reliable.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Have a valid Washington State Drivers License or the ability to obtain one prior to start date.
  • Have a valid Washington State Flagging Certificate valid CPR and First Aid certifications OR ability to obtain within two (2) months of hire.
  • An offer of employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must be able to lift carry move or handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform duties involving physical labor including bending kneeling standing reaching climbing stooping squatting pushing and twisting.
  • Must be able to perform work outdoors in inclement weather.
Supplemental Information

PRACTICAL EXAM/INTERVIEWS ALL IN ONE DAY:
Those applicants who pass the initial screening will be invited to participate in an in-person practical exam/interview on the same day. Only those who pass the practical exam will move forward to interview.

WHO MAY APPLY:
This recruitment is open to all King County employees and the general public. This recruitment is being used to fill three (3) Career Service roles and one (1) Short-Term Temporary position which is anticipated to last up to six months (with possibility of extension) and may be used to fill future career service term-limited temporary (TLT) special duty assignment (SDA) or short-term temporary positions over the next twelve months.

Special duty opportunities are open only to current King County career service employees who have completed their initial probation. Special duty applicants must have approval from their current supervisor to accept an assignment. Current employees selected for special duty will be compensated based upon the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement King County Personnel Guidelines or Coalition Labor Agreement for their base assignment.

WORK SCHEDULE:
The work schedule will consist of five eight-hour days in the fall/winter Monday Friday 7:00 am 3:30 pm and four ten-hour days in the spring/summer Monday Thursday 6:00 am 4:30 pm. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay. Working extended shifts after-hours mandatory overtime weekends callouts and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances such as inclement weather and/or special projects which can vary based upon business need season and weather.

First Responder - Employees who in the early stages of an incident are responsible for protecting and preserving life property evidence the environment and restoring order.
