About the Unit
Our Med Surg Unit is a 25-bed department providing comprehensive care to patients from Mason County and surrounding West Michigan communities.
This unit cares for a wide range of medical conditions including:
Pneumonia and respiratory illnesses
Cellulitis and infectious processes
Kidney failure and acute/chronic kidney injury
Diabetes-related conditions and hyperglycemia
Ulcers and wound care needs
Geriatric and confused elderly patients
Alcohol-related health concerns
Sepsis
Select psychiatric patients
Med Surg offers a broad clinical experience with a supportive team environment.

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse assist in the development of nursing care plans and perform a variety of both technical
and routine nursing services consistent with such plans.
Performs activities under the direction of the RN per job description and after skill validation.
Applies the Core concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care in practice and uses this knowledge to personalize care for
each patient/family.
Performs routine bedside nursing activities including: bathing and personal grooming of patients; ambulating moving and
turning patients; assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices; making patient beds and caring for personal property.
Takes vital signs and records intake and output.
Applies and changes sterile and non-sterile dressing using appropriate technique.
Provides care to the patient according to the plan of care unit routine and hospital policy under the direction of a Registered
nurse. Documents in electronic medical record.
Keeps professional nursing staff advised of current patient status as well as changes in patient condition as
