The Opportunity

Are you an ambitious researcher looking to drive innovation at the intersection of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics rheology and advanced mineral processing Join our world-class team in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering as a Research Fellow (Level A) and play a critical role in an exciting ARC Centre of Excellence project.

In this role youll lead the theoretical and rheological investigation for ARC Centre Project S27b. Youll explore how non-Newtonian suspension rheology governs ultrafine particle transport and gravity separation in inclined channels under variable acceleration fields. Working alongside leading experts and key collaborators at the University of Newcastle you will bridge the gap between fundamental fluid dynamics and real-world separation performance.

What Youll Do

  • Advance Rheological Discovery: Formulate and characterise model suspensions across Newtonian shear-thinning and shear-thickening regimes using state-of-the-art rotational and high-shear rheometry.

  • Bridge Theory and Practice: Develop and validate cutting-edge theoretical and numerical models connecting suspension mechanics to gravity separation performance.

  • Collaborate and Impact: Publish high-impact papers present at key international conferences and work closely with the broader ARC Centre community.

  • Mentor the Next Generation: Provide expert guidance to postgraduate research students while contributing to a vibrant academic environment.

What Youll Bring

  • Education: A PhD (or near completion) in Chemical Mechanical or Minerals Engineering Applied Mathematics Physics or a closely related field.

  • Rheology and Fluid Mechanics Expertise: Hands-on experience in complex fluid/suspension rheometry constitutive modelling and a strong foundation in particle-laden multiphase flows.

  • Analytical and Computational Skills: Demonstrated ability to analyse complex suspension flows with proficiency in scientific programming (Python or MATLAB) being highly valued.

  • Research Excellence: A strong track record of refereed publications exceptional problem-solving skills and top-tier written and verbal communication.

Why Join Us

This position offers some supervision autonomy within a collaborative collegiate environment providing the ideal platform to build your academic profile expand your research network and tackle complex industrial and scientific challenges.
