Job Summary

Job Title: Phlebotomist
No of Positions or candidates required: 8 FTE

Shift Schedule: Monday Friday 4 shifts (including federal holidays):
  • 7:00 AM 1:30 PM (1 FTE Draw Station)
  • 5:00 AM 1:30 PM (2 FTE Processing Area)
  • 1:30 PM 9:00 PM (2 FTE Processing Area & Floor Draw)
  • 9:00 PM 5:30 AM (1 FTE Processing Area & Floor Draw)
Shifts subject to change. Overtime with COR approval.
How many shifts needed per month: 21 22 shifts/month per FTE (Full-time 2080 regular annual hours; 3416 combined OT/holiday hours across all 6 FTEs)
Credentialing / Onboarding time: 6 to 8 weeks
License: Any state license works
Certifications: National or state recognized phlebotomy certification (e.g. CPT ASCP NHA AMT).
Education: High school diploma or equivalent with completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program
Experience needed: Minimum 1 year phlebotomy experience. Prior VA experience preferred.
Special Skills needed:
  • Venipuncture (vacutainer syringe/butterfly) and finger stick procedures
  • Specimen accessioning centrifugation processing and transport packaging
  • Urine specimen collection and processing
  • Computer proficiency mandatory (VistA/lab system)
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission standards safety and infection control
  • Strong patient customer service skills
Responsibilities:
  • Perform full range of phlebotomy procedures using government-furnished equipment and supplies
  • Patient in-processing correct patient identification and specimen verification per test orders
  • Accession all specimens affix labels record initials and collection time
  • Collect and process blood and urine samples; perform centrifugation as directed
  • Deliver samples to appropriate departments; process tube station
  • Package and prepare specimens for transport per receiving facility instructions
  • Maintain cleanliness of phlebotomy/accessioning area; rotate and discard expired supplies
  • Conduct periodic inventory and notify management of low stock
  • Document all samples per lab SOPs; perform front desk clerical duties
  • Adhere to Joint Commission VA policies safety and infection control protocols at all times
