About the NIHCS Facility
VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (NIHCS) was formed in 1995 by the integration of the VA Medical Centers in Fort Wayne and Marion Indiana. The mission of VA Northern Indiana Health Care System is to provide coordinated compassionate and comprehensive quality primary care mental health services and extended care to veterans in a timely accessible and cost-effective manner. The Fort Wayne Campus offers primary and secondary medical and surgical services and the Marion Campus offers a full range of psychiatry services nursing home care and extended care services. Primary care clinics are available at both campuses and at Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in Peru Goshen South Bend and Muncie Indiana. Although the Marion Campus is well over 110 years old and the Fort Wayne Campus was constructed in 1950 recently completed renovations and construction and continuous maintenance ensure an attractive state-of-the-art healthcare environment.

URGENT CARE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Shall provide direct and indirect nursing care by contributing to the patients assessment determining priorities identifying nursing measures and therapeutic objectives and evaluating outcomes. The position requires independent judgment and nursing actions flexibility organization skills and the ability to utilize an interdisciplinary approach in the provision of nursing care.
  • Obtain patient history and pertinent family history.
  • Assess patients and plan appropriate nursing care.
  • Document plan of care and care given in patients medical record.
  • Verify transcription of physicians orders no verbal orders are to be accepted.
  • Carry out prescribed physicians orders and document inpatient medical records.
  • Communicate pertinent patient data to charge nurse and/or physician as appropriate.
  • Re-assess patients condition and revise plans of care based on identified nursing problems.
  • Administer medications and Intravenous (IV) therapies.
  • Possess knowledge of actions and usual dosages of most commonly used emergency drugs and their location on the crash cart.
  • Assess and document patient response to medication that has been administered.
  • Be able to interpret cardiac rhythms and their implications.
  • Reorganize and initiate appropriate measures in emergencies/therapies and surgical/diagnostic procedures that shall be accomplished.
  • Instruct patient/family regarding prescribed medications/therapies and surgical/diagnostic procedures that shall be accomplished.
  • Assess patient/family knowledge level implement plan of instructions and record patient/family demonstrated level of understanding.
  • Operate defibrillator EKG machines cardiac monitor and other emergency technical equipment.
  • Participate in discharge planning as appropriate.
  • Be able to initiate life-saving measures in the absence of physicians.
URGENT CARE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Shall have a current license in at least one state territory or commonwealth in the U.S. or the District of Columbia.
  • Current certification in CPR/BLS and ACLS by an American Health Association Vendor.
  • Must have a minimum of one year of direct patient care experience within the Urgent Care specialty assigned; VA experience is desirable.
  • Immunizations must be up to date to include COVID Vaccine (Boosters required exception: medical/religious exemption accepted).
