Job Overview
A healthcare organization in Show Low Arizona is seeking experienced Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery for permanent night-shift opportunities.
The L&D RN will provide comprehensive care throughout labor delivery recovery postpartum and couplet care. This unit manages both routine and high-risk obstetric patients including patients with pre-eclampsia and fetal distress.
Because an OB provider and neonatologist are not continuously in-house nurses must have strong assessment skills excellent fetal monitoring competency and the ability to recognize and respond to obstetric emergencies until the provider arrives.
Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care throughout labor delivery recovery and postpartum
- Perform comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments
- Monitor fetal heart rate patterns and uterine activity
- Recognize fetal distress and initiate appropriate nursing interventions
- Care for patients with pre-eclampsia and other high-risk obstetric conditions
- Respond confidently to obstetric emergencies while awaiting provider arrival
- Assist with vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections
- Provide preoperative and postoperative nursing care for C-section patients
- Provide couplet care to mothers and newborns when department census and workflow require it
- Manage antepartum and triage patients
- Administer medications IV therapies blood products and treatments according to established protocols
- Collaborate with physicians nursing leadership respiratory therapy pharmacy scrub techs and other members of the care team
- Educate patients and families regarding labor delivery postpartum recovery breastfeeding newborn care and discharge planning
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Follow infection-control patient-safety and maternal-newborn care standards
- Participate in required call rotation
- Float to other hospital units most commonly Medical-Surgical when operationally necessary
Qualifications
Required
- Current Registered Nurse license or eligibility for Arizona licensure
- Minimum of three years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience
- Recent C-section experience
- Strong experience caring for high-risk obstetric patients
- Proficiency in fetal heart rate monitoring and interventions for fetal distress
- Experience caring for patients with pre-eclampsia
- Ability to independently assess and respond to obstetric emergencies
- Ability to provide both Labor & Delivery and couplet/postpartum care
- Current Basic Life Support certification
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification
- Current Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification
- Strong clinical judgment prioritization and emergency-response skills
- Ability to work night shifts and participate in call rotation
Preferred
- More than three years of Labor & Delivery experience
- Previous high-risk obstetric nursing experience
- Experience working in an L&D department without continuous in-house OB coverage
- Previous postpartum Mother-Baby or couplet-care experience
- Experience floating to Medical-Surgical or other inpatient units
Department Information
The Labor & Delivery department includes:
- 7 Labor & Delivery beds
- 2 triage beds
- 10 postpartum beds
- Approximately 13 births per day
- Approximately 830 births annually
- Typical nursing ratio of approximately 1:2
- Respiratory Therapist available on the unit 24/7
- 24/7 in-house pharmacy
- OB scrub technician support
- Patient Care Technicians and Health Unit Secretary support
- Nurse Manager available to provide patient-care assistance when needed
- OB and Neonatology providers are not continuously in-house
Schedule & Call
- Full-time night-shift position
- Approximately one call shift per four-week scheduling period
- Floating may be required based on hospital census typically to Medical-Surgical
