Position Summary
The Emergency Department Director at Sentara Leigh Hospital is accountable for the 24/7 daily operations clinical effectiveness strategic planning and budget management of the emergency unit. The Director leads a team of ER nurses technicians and support staff to ensure high-quality efficient patient care aligned with Sentara Healthcares mission.
Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Leadership:Oversee daily ED operations patient flow and throughput to maintain target wait times and short lengths of stay.
  • Quality & Patient Safety:Partner with hospital leadership to implement evidence-based practices that improve clinical outcomes regulatory compliance and patient satisfaction.
  • Staff Mentorship:Mentor recruit and retain clinical staff by modeling a professional practice environment.
  • Financial Management:Develop monitor and manage the departmental budget including purchasing payroll and resource utilization.
  • Community & Emergency Services:Coordinate care for urgent and emergent cases including supporting the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance landing pad on campus.
Qualifications
  • Education:Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Masters degree preferred.
  • License:Current active Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Experience:Minimum of 3 to 5 years of acute care nursing experience with significant leadership and supervisory experience in an Emergency Department setting.
  • Certifications:Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
