Public Health Internship Program (PHIP) Fall 2026

Welcome to the Maryland Department of Healths (MDH)PublicHealth Internship Programor PHIP(formerly known as the Public HealthWorkforce Development Internship Program)!

We invite youto join us for our Fall 2026 program is designed to establish collaborative partnerships with academicinstitutions providing invaluable student internship opportunitiesandfostering a seamless transition from graduation to the public healthworkforce. The fall session will span 12 weeks running fromSeptember 23 2026 December 15 2026.

We inviteundergraduate and graduate students with astrong academic standing and a specific interest in public health to apply. Toaccommodate different preferences and circumstances we offerhybrid andin-person internship the 12-week period studentscan work up to a maximum of 240 hours averaging approximately 20 hours perweek.

Our program encompasses various exciting areas of thiscohortincluding Behavioral Sciences Community Health EpidemiologyHealth Education Health Informatics Health Policy Healthcare AdministrationInfectious Disease Preparedness andResponse and Public HealthCommunications.

To ensure a tailored experience please complete asupplemental questionnaire that allows you to indicate your preferred subjectareasyour interest in in-person or hybrid opportunities and the countyor counties where you would like to intern. Rest assured that your applicationwill be reviewed by program managers whomatch the criteria youselect.

While students may be considered for multiple openingsplease note that selected students will be hired for only one students can onlyaccept one opening.Tocomplete your application please remember to submit a copy of your unofficialtranscripts.

Statewide (Multiple Counties throughout Maryland) -Please indicate your counties of interest on your application.

Hybrid and fully in-person opportunities may beavailable. We are not currently offering fully remoteopportunities. Interns are responsible for their own housing.

Candidates must possess the following:

• At least 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university with current enrollment in an undergraduate programORcandidates must becurrently enrolled in a graduate program.
• Must have at least a 2.5 GPA or equivalent.
• Recent graduates from an accredited college or university may also apply.
• Recent graduates are defined as individuals who have completed a bachelors or masters degree from an accredited college or universityon or after August 1 2025.

Transcripts diplomas and/or proof of enrollment must be submitted at timeof application. Transcripts may be unofficial. Transcripts or anydocumentation submitted after the closing date will not be accepted.

IMPORTANT!

When attaching your transcripts proof of enrollment diploma resume cover letter or any other accompanying documents please combine them into one document and attach them as one document. NEXT STEPS:

1.) Once your application has been received by our Office of Human Resources we will review your application to ensure that you meet the minimum qualifications of the internship program. Approval of your application is not placement. Candidates are not placed; they are selected by the hiring managers. Not all applicants will be selected as there are only a limited number of openings.

2.) If you are qualified your application will be shared with the hiring managers for each vacancy. Managers will review candidates and select applicants to interview. These interviews may be virtual or in-person.

3.) Please pay attention to your emails. This is where your notices and invitations for interviews will be sent.
