What is the Role

The College and Postsecondary Success Team plays a critical role in ensuring that 100% of our scholars are equipped with the knowledge and tools to navigate their college and career journey successfully. We aim to ensure that at least 95% of our seniors matriculate into college while also providing support for those who pursue alternative pathways after graduation. As a Postsecondary College Counselor at Coney Island Prep you will work closely with your fellow counselors and the Alumni Success Team to foster a strong college-going culture. The team collaborates with junior and senior students high school staff families colleges universities and community partners to provide comprehensive guidance and support ensuring students are well-prepared to succeed in college. Your work will focus on guiding juniors and their families through the college search and application process facilitating a seamless transition from high school to whats next.

The Postsecondary College Counselors work in our high school and report to the Director of College & Postsecondary Success. This leave replacement position runs through October 2026. Employment past October 2026 is contingent upon performance and vacancies within and across the organization.

What Youll Be Asked To Do

Collaborate and co-lead College and Career Readiness (CCR) courses in the fall of 2026.

  • Teach classes of 15-25 juniors twice weekly in curriculum relevant to the college application process
  • Manage the course through planning grading and classroom culture in collaboration with the school culture team
  • Collaborate with fellow college counselors to monitor classrooms and provide additional assistance to students outside your caseload as needed; engage in weekly team planning meetings
  • Monitor duties that support school-wide initiatives including hallway lunch and transition duties
  • Facilitate student advisory group in homeroom spaces and weekly meetings with a group of 10-12 students; promote academic success college readiness career awareness and self-discovery
  • Occasionally hold office hours immediately after school
  • Maintain weekly grades and daily attendance in PowerSchool for juniors in your sections
  • Support students with disabilities in your caseload by attending their IEP meetings and finding colleges that will continue to provide them with the specific supports to be successful beyond high school

Deliver exceptional results by ensuring all scholars matriculate to their best-matched college or university.

  • Support students and their families through revising personal statements researching and editing their college lists
  • Correspond with college admissions and scholarship representatives to schedule visits info sessions interviews and fly-ins; encourage students to attend
  • Plan coordinate and deliver signature college counseling events including our Junior College Readiness for Families Nights student college visits parent financial aid workshops and a fall school wide trip
  • Train for and fully utilize Overgrad resources to facilitate the college search and application process; manage student and college data
  • Commit to constant professional and personal growth by working closely with the Director of College & Postsecondary Success and attending professional development training

  • Proven organizational oral and written communication skills; timeliness; accuracy; and consistent and regular communication; and ability to meet due dates
  • A service-oriented mindset that keeps our families and students at the center of decision-making
  • Awareness that each piece of communication is reflective of our schools reputation and advances our brand
  • Knowledge of data tracking systems such as Overgrad Schoolrunner Google Suite and PowerSchool is a plus but not required
  • Self-reflective and open to feedback with the ambition and desire to grow and develop
  • A positive solutions-oriented attitude and drive for excellence
  • Interpersonal skills to foster relationships with college staff school staff scholars and their families
  • Bachelors degree and background in college counseling preferably in a charter school
  • Multilingual proficiency a plus; Spanish Russian or Cantonese preferred
  • Ability to coordinate and attend occasional afterschool weekend events and overnight trips

Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn New York. Coney Island Prep currently serves over 1300 scholars across its four schools including:

  • 312 scholars in kindergarten second grade at the lower elementary school
  • 336 scholars in third fifth grade at the upper elementary school
  • 348 scholars in sixth eighth grades at the middle school
  • 349 scholars in ninth-twelfth grade at the high school

  • Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive set through a lens of equity and based on an individuals skills and experiences relevant to the role. The salary range for this role is from $80000 - 85000.
