Onondaga Community College located in Syracuse NY is a college of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and one of 30 locally sponsored community colleges throughout New York State. The Phlebotomy Instructor is responsible for delivering instruction in the Phlebotomy Training Program including asynchronous online coursework and in-person laboratory sessions. The instructor prepares students for entry-level Phlebotomy careers and for national certification examinations including the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) exam.

Instruction may includedelivery of pre-developed online theory content laboratory simulation and oversight of student competency documentation. Off-site clinical placements are coordinated by program administration; the instructor does not travel to clinical sites.

The instructor prepares instructional materials evaluates student performance through written exams and hands-on competency assessments and provides timely feedback to support student success. Maintaining accurate records of attendance grades and laboratory competencies is essential.

In addition to teaching responsibilities the Phlebotomy Instructor collaborates with program directors primary faculty and campus stakeholders to ensure curriculum relevance regulatory compliance and alignment with healthcare standards. The instructor supports student engagement retention certification readiness and professional development while promoting the overall integrity and quality of the program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Deliver pre-developed asynchronous online content via D2L. Minor updates to course settings such as syllabus dates or assignment availability may be required.
• Conduct in-person laboratory sessions.
• Demonstrate and supervise simulated venipuncture capillary puncture specimen processing infection control and safety procedures.
• Track student performance and laboratory skill competency; review clinical evaluations provided by program administration.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance progress grades and laboratory competencies.
• Respond to student questions related to course and lab content.
• Create and maintain a supportive safe and inclusive learning environment that prepares students for employment in the field.
• A commitment to student engagement safety and inclusive teaching practices.
• Maintain laboratory equipment supplies and safety standards; submit supply and equipment requests as needed.
• Collaborate with program leadership to ensure training quality regulatory compliance and accreditation standards are met.
• Participate in faculty meetings program review curriculum development accreditation activities and professional development as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors degree from a regionallyaccredited college university or foreign equivalency in Nursing Medical Laboratory Technology or a related healthcare field with relevant phlebotomyexperience.

OR

• Current national phlebotomy certification (ASCP NHA AMT NCCT or equivalent) with relevantphlebotomyexperience.

OR

• Medical Assistant certification with relevant phlebotomy experience.

OR

• Current RN or LPN licensure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous teaching experience at the community college or postsecondary level.
• Experience supervising students in laboratory settings.
• Familiarity with accreditation standards and regulatory compliance.
• Experience with hybrid or online instruction.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
• Ability to write reports manage classroom activities and handle student crises appropriately.
• Ability to work independently and solve problems effectively.
• Bilingual in English and and another language will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES

• Strong interpersonal organizational and administrative skills.
• Thorough knowledge of venipuncture and capillary collection techniques.
• Understanding of specimen handling infection control and laboratory safety procedures.
• Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements including OSHA HIPAA CLIA and New York State Department of Health regulations.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse learners.
• Ability to assess student competency and provide meaningful feedback.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty staff clinical partners and administrators.
• Proficiency in instructional technology and learning management systems.
• Apply broad theoretical job knowledge typically obtained through post-secondary education or equivalent work experience.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to inclusive student-centered teaching practices.
• Manual dexterity to demonstrate venipuncture techniques.
• Ability to stand and walk during lab sessions and lift laboratory supplies up to approximately 25 pounds.
• May have flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed.

This is a part-time hourly position with a rate of pay of $45 per hour.

Lab instruction may be offered on OCCs main campus or at alternate locations in Downtown Syracuse.
