The pharmacy unit plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medications for patients. The unit is responsible for dispensing medications accurately and efficiently maintaining comprehensive medication inventory and control including narcotics and controlled substances. This includes selecting calculating measuring preparing (both sterile and non-sterile) packaging labeling charging and crediting various pharmacy products like intravenous addition the pharmacy ensures compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop pharmacists work schedule. Grants and mandates overtime and time off.Assigns and directs workflow within the department.
  • Acts as liaison to the IT pharmacist for Epic application.
  • Ensure pharmacy SOX compliance including assisting with review of pharmacy daily charges and financial work queues for errors omissions etc. Facilitates corrections as needed. Sign off on daily SOX reports and invoices in the absence of the Director.
  • Review and approve employee time records for payroll.
  • Reviews medication events and reports to various committees including P&T Patient Safety etc.
  • Serve as the back-up coordinator for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program and perform tasks associated with this role.
  • Serve as primary contact for investigational drug studies at MMC.

Participates in each of the following responsibilities:

  • Layoff and Recall; Recommends reduction in employee complement and initiates action notifies employee(s) if conditions meet specific criteria.
  • Promote and Evaluate; independently evaluates and determines work assignmentsrecognizes performances. Complete periodic performance evaluations on direct reports as determined by hospital policy.
  • Suspend and Discharge; Exercise employee suspensions or discharges.
  • Adjust Grievances; Meet with employees to listen to and resolve employee issues and adjust grievances.
  • Discipline; implement disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Exercise Supervisory Authority over pharmacists technicians interns and other support staff.
  • Develop communicate and implement department and/or hospital policy; ensure all employees are trained in policy; exercise discretion independent of policy to ensure proper function of department.
  • Maintain inventory of controlled substances including; record keeping ordering development and enforcement of policies and procedures.
  • Review investigate and assign controlled substance events identified through diversion monitoring system (ControlCheck).
  • Assign and schedule mandatory education and training.
  • Oversee training and competency assessments for employees.
  • Assure compliance with all regulatory agencies including but not limited to The Joint Commission PA Board of Pharmacy PA Department of Health CMS DEA etc.
  • Submit reports on the accomplishment of related responsibilities as requested by the Department Director.
  • Represent the pharmacy department at various interdisciplinary committees.
  • Review and approve pharmacy invoices.
  • Assist with drug shortages and recalls.
  • Communicate regular updates to staff viadaily briefs monthly staff meetings and email communications as needed.
  • Serve as liaison to other CHS entities (MiMC MyMC Nason).
  • Act as Pharmacist in Charge in the absence of the Director.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Implement and manage all processes and procedures relevant to safe efficient in-patient and outpatient dispensing services.
  • Provide clinical pharmacy informationrespond to requests for clinical pharmacy information that originate from the attending and resident medical staffs nursing patients and other departments.
  • Evaluate appropriateness of pharmacologic therapy for all age groups (pediatric adolescent adult and geriatric).
  • Maintain all documentation related to patient care including patient profiles billing records dispensing logs and inventory control.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Serve on institutional patient care committees complete assigned projects and provide information as directed by Committee Chairpersons or the Director ofPharmaceutical Care Services.
  • Assist with plans and projects of the Department.
  • Interpret and evaluate pharmacotherapyroutinely review appropriateness/effectiveness or per physician request or per protocol directed activities; when appropriate recommend cost-effective drug therapy alternatives.
  • Supervise/participate in the in-patient and out-patient medication distribution process:
    • document drug therapy by maintaining patient specific medication profile.
    • dispense medications.
    • prepare compounded doses including sterile products.
    • issue drug stock supplies.
    • assure proper labeling.
    • assure timeliness of services.
    • assure patient charge justification.
    • effectively utilize automated pharmacy information management systems.
    • maintain dispensing records in accordance with all applicable laws/regulations.
    • dispense and assure the perpetual inventory justification process for DEA Schedule II drugs.
    • inspect and certify proper drug storage.
    • assist in inventory control.
    • recognize/report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.

What were looking for
Applicants should have a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Pharmacy Doctorate or foreign graduate equivalent.

  • At least two years experience in a progressive hospital pharmacy similar in scope to Memorial Medical Center.
  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed as a pharmacist in Pennsylvania.
