Description of Work

The primary role of the Peer Support Specialist at JFK ADATC is the facilitation of psychoeducational groups/classes/lectures to patients with substance use and mental health disorders. Topics include dual diagnosis (MH and SUD) relapse prevention 12 step book study and stages of change etc. These groups take place up to three times a day including evening and weekend days. The position is responsible for documentation of group attendance and participation in the electronic health record system. This position has the autonomy to create recovery based curriculum develop new group topics and facilitate educational lectures that coincide with the JFK patient activity schedule.

The Peer Support Specialist maintains professional boundaries and effective working relationships with clinical staff including substance abuse counselors social workers recreational therapists nurses psychiatric staff medical staff etc. To this end the position provides advocacy and support services from a non-clinical perspective in an inpatient setting and works with patients during the episode of care offering mentorship emotional support and encouragement throughout the recovery journey.

  • Ability to create and maintain records notes and reports of client/patient progress and behaviors.
  • Ability to support adults in both group and one-on-one settings.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with community/outreach service providers persons with substance use and/or mental health disorders treatment team members and clinical staff in verbal and written forms.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with clinical professionals involved in treating substance use and/or mental health disorders.

This Position Is Designated As Mandatory And Must Report Or Stay Over During Adverse Weather Events.

About the Facility:

JFK is a 68-bed inpatient treatment facility designed to meet the needs of adults with substance use disorders from the 44 westernmost counties in North Carolina. The facility treats individuals with substance abuse and psychiatric diagnoses. JFK is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a Behavioral Health facility and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as an inpatient psychiatric hospital.
