Location: LNC Elementary Schools (East and West) Huntersville NC

Reports to: Building Principals

Suggested Work Schedule: 4 days/week 8am-3pm

Purpose: Lake Norman Charter (LNC) is a K-12 public charter school that provides a rigorous and comprehensive educational environment to develop students with a focus on college readiness leadership and social responsibility.

The purpose of the Elementary School Nurse is to support the health safety and well-being of all students so they are able to fully participate in the educational environment. The School Nurse provides direct care for student illnesses and injuries administers medications and prescribed treatments manages student health plans and records responds to medical emergencies and monitors students with chronic or specialized health needs. Working collaboratively with families school staff healthcare providers and administrators the school nurse serves as a trusted resource for health-related concerns while promoting healthy practices maintaining confidentiality and ensuring compliance with applicable school health policies and procedures. Through compassionate care sound professional judgment and proactive communication the school nurse plays an essential role in creating a safe healthy and supportive elementary school community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide compassionate age-appropriate nursing care to students who become ill or injured during the school day.

• Assess student illnesses and injuries and determine appropriate care including when a student may safely return to class should be sent home or requires emergency medical attention.

• Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications in accordance with physician orders parent authorization school policies and applicable regulations.

• Maintain accurate medication records and ensure medications are stored securely and appropriately.

• Develop maintain and implement individualized health care plans and emergency action plans for students with chronic or significant medical conditions.

• Monitor and support students with conditions such as asthma diabetes severe allergies seizure disorders and other ongoing health needs.

• Respond promptly and appropriately to medical emergencies and provide first aid CPR and other emergency care within the nurses scope of practice.

• Communicate with parents/guardians as needed regarding student illnesses injuries health concerns medication needs and follow-up care.

• Maintain accurate confidential and up-to-date student health records and documentation.

• Review student health information and alert appropriate staff members to medical needs accommodations or emergency procedures while maintaining student confidentiality.

• Monitor student immunization and health documentation and assist families with meeting applicable school health requirements.

• Conduct or coordinate any required health screenings such as vision and hearing screenings and communicate appropriate follow-up information to families.

• Collaborate with administrators teachers counselors exceptional childrens staff and other school personnel to support students health and educational needs.

• Participate as appropriate in student support meetings Section 504 meetings IEP meetings or other meetings when a students medical needs affect their school experience.

• Provide staff with appropriate training and guidance regarding student-specific medical needs emergency medications allergies and health procedures.

• Maintain the school health room and ensure medical supplies emergency equipment and first-aid materials are appropriately stocked organized and accessible.

• Monitor for patterns of illness or communicable disease and follow established procedures for notification exclusion documentation and return to school.

• Promote healthy habits and provide developmentally appropriate health education and guidance to students and staff as needed.

• Serve as a resource to staff and families regarding student health wellness and school health procedures.

• Demonstrate sensitivity patience discretion and sound professional judgment when working with elementary-aged students and their families.

• Maintain student privacy and confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws regulations and school policies.

• Follow all school safety procedures and assist with emergency preparedness and response planning.

• Collaborate with school administration regarding health-related concerns that may impact the safety or well-being of the school community.

• Perform other health- and safety-related duties as assigned by the school administration that are consistent with the employees training licensure and scope of practice.

• Work in collaboration with LNC Student and Family Services Representatives to ensure that the front office is covered at all times. This includes answering the phone and welcoming visitors as needed.

• Work in collaboration with the District Health Care Coordinator to develop student healthcare plans in conjunction with teaching staff and administration for students with identified chronic illness that may impact their learning (i.e. organ transplant severe diabetes etc.)

• Perform additional duties as assigned by the building principal or other designated administrative staff.

EDUCATION CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Under State guidelines meet at least one of the following minimum pathways:
• Hold an active unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in North Carolina plus have at least 2 years of work experience as a nurse in a hospital or health clinic; OR
• Hold a current national school nurse certification from the National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
• Previous work and/or experience in schools or other environments with children preferred
