Job Summary
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Provide instruction in Orientation and Mobility to Berkeley County students who are Blind/Low Vision or Deafblind.
REPORTS TO:
Executive Director of Special Education
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Certificate in Orientation and Mobility Therapy from accredited program required.
o Preference given to candidates with ACVREP certification.
Hold or acquire Braille skill level for job classification

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to reach stand walk lift grasp write talk hear see use technology such as computers and multimedia equipment and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material the ability to adjust focus. The position required the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB). Work environment is subject to change due to unexpected circumstances as determined to the Superintendent.
HOURS OF WORK:
40 hours per week Monday through Friday schedule with other hours as necessary. 200-day annual contract. Exempt position.
FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Adhere to WVDE Policy 5902 - Employee Code of Conduct and applicable personnel policies for employee performance.
Ensure appropriate student supervision
Implement programs of study
Foster a classroom climate conducive to learning
Utilize instructional management systems models that increase student learning
Monitor student progress towards mastery of instructional goals and objectives
Communicate effectively within the educational community and with parents on a regular basis
Meet professional responsibilities
Demonstrate competency in the knowledge and implementation of technology standards
Follow applicable school and departmental policies and procedures as well as State regulations and West Virginia Board of Education policies.
Develop implement and review sequential curriculum guides and courses of study. These are to follow the guidelines as established by the curriculum committee.
Prepare implement and evaluate individualized education programs in accordance with curriculum guides in each subject.
Use appropriate materials methods and equipment in teaching students with visual disabilities.
Prepare daily lesson plans reflecting appropriate student objectives and goals at least one week in advance.
Develop appropriate teaching materials.
Provide instruction in Orientation and Mobility as stated in each childs individual education plan.
Provide Orientation and Mobility services to students in various assigned schools in Berkeley County as assigned.
In cooperation with the appropriate personnel provide trainings and/or evaluation programs to students served by schools in Berkeley County.
Evaluate student work formally and informally.
Attend to student social emotional physical and academic needs. Refer students in need of special services such as counseling and physical therapy.
Plan and direct programs for special events.
Plan and supervise field trips.
Maintain parent-teacher communication as well as consistent communication with Teachers of the Visually Impaired.
Monitor halls and stairways when students arrive and leave as well as when they change classes for safety.
Use basic office equipment and audio-visual equipment.
Teach Orientation and Mobility and pre-cane skills to students who are Blind/Low Vision or Deafblind PK-12. Evaluate all students for Orientation and Mobility skills and implement appropriate curriculum as needed.
Regulate off school/community travel system to allow students to travel to residential business areas public transportation systems independently after school hours as appropriate.
Coordinate staff development of Orientation and Mobility skills.
Consistently update school staff regarding which students participate in community travel and associated rules for travel.
Accompany students off campus in the local community and larger cities to provide varying travel experiences.

Keep and maintain records of all students materials (e.g. canes low vision devices etc.) in collaboration with the Executive Director of Special Education.
Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
SALARY:
Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-2 in accordance with Berkeley County Professional Salary Schedule commensurate with experience and education level 200-day annual contract.
EVALUATION:
Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310.
