Position Summary
Indiana University Bloomington ( IUB ) invites applications for an open-rank tenured/tenure-track faculty position in the School of Public Health-Bloomington in the field of Aging and Technology. We seek candidates to join IUs outstanding research enterprise in aging and gerontology and collaborate in areas such as social and behavioral science digital health behavioral epidemiology bio-health informatics human factors robotics implementation science and neuroscience . The position is part of Indiana Universitys Faculty 100 initiative a strategic investment in exceptional scholars whose work advances the universitys research excellence and national impact. We encourage applications from scholars who bring interdisciplinary perspectives and whose research complements existing strengths at Indiana University while introducing new directions that expand and strengthen the institutions research capacity in aging and technology. This 10month appointment begins August 1 2027 although an earlier or later start date is negotiable. Responsibilities Tenured/tenure-track faculty at Indiana University Bloomington are expected to contribute substantially to the universitys missions of research teaching and service. Responsibilities include: Developing and maintaining an externally funded and nationally recognized research program; Pursuing and securing major extramural funding as principal investigator and collaborative investigator; Publishing impactful scholarship in leading peer-reviewed outlets; Teaching and mentoring undergraduate graduate and doctoral students; Engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration across Indiana University and with external partners; and Providing service and leadership within the department school university profession and community. Candidates with special interest in any of the following (or related) areas are encouraged to apply: Wearable & Ambient Sensors: Continuous physiological and behavioral monitoring; fall detection and prediction; dementia care and wandering prevention; activity tracking for chronic disease management. Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Predictive risk modeling for falls hospitalization and cognitive decline; Natural Language Processing ( NLP ) for remote cognitive assessment; image analysis for wound care; condition prediction and diagnosis. Conversational AI & Social Robotics: Companionship for socially isolated or lonely older adults; medication reminders for adherence; caregiver-facing information and guidance systems. Telehealth & Remote Monitoring: Chronic disease management; specialist access for rural populations; post-acute monitoring to prevent readmissions. Smart Home Technologies: Automated safety systems for dementia patients; environmental controls for mobility-limited adults; passive monitoring without wearables. Digital Biomarkers: Passively collected behavioral data from consumer devices enabling detection of cognitive decline mood changes and functional deterioration years before clinical presentation. Extended Reality (XR / VR): Pain management cognitive rehabilitation physical therapy engagement and social connection for homebound and institutionalized older adults. This position is located on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. Successful candidates are expected to work on campus to allow full engagement with the department school university and community. Indiana University bases tenure and promotion recommendations upon performance in research teaching and service. Faculty hired through this initiative are expected to excel in research and demonstrate strong performance in teaching and service. The successful candidate will contribute to and help expand Indiana Universitys nationally recognized aging research enterprise. The individual will have opportunities to collaborate broadly across Indiana University schools centers and institutes including the Regenstrief Institute the Irsay Institute the Luddy School of Informatics Computing and Engineering the School of Medicine the School of Nursing and other units engaged in aging health technology and data science research. The position is intended to catalyze innovative interdisciplinary partnerships support multi-investigator research initiatives and strengthen Indiana Universitys competitiveness for large-scale federal foundation and industry-funded research programs. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must hold an earned doctoral degree in public health behavioral science social science data science informatics engineering neuroscience rehabilitation science health services research or a closely related field by the date of appointment and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in research teaching mentoring and service appropriate to rank. Candidates for tenured positions must demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for an appointment with tenure including extramurally funded research as a principal investigator current funding or strong potential to secure external funding an established record of publications and scholarly contributions and experience leading significant research initiatives.
