Minimumof two years of experience and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)experience in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Licensure/Registration/ Certification:

  • CurrentLicense to practice nursing in the state of Minnesota

  • Certificationas a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner through NCC.

POSITIONSUMMARY STATEMENT:


TheNeonatal Nurse Practitioner functions as an associate of thesupervising group of Neonatologists in coordinating the patient careneeds of the high-risk newborns within Regions Hospital. The NNPfunctions in an advanced practice provider role responsible forcomplete 24 hour/day and 7 days/week management of the NICU LEVEL IIpatients. The practitioner has responsibility for assessment andmanagement of patients including diagnostic and therapeuticinterventions and daily implementation and evaluation of anappropriate plan of care. The NNP is also a participant in andcontributor to continuing education and staff development withinperinatal services as well as involvement in outreach programsprovided to outlying hospitals.



MAJORJOB DUTIES AND TASKS:

Responsiblefor the primary care of neonates (age 0 to 30 days) in the NICULEVEL II

a. Performscomplete history: elicits records and interprets a complete healthhistory to include all obstetrical medical family andpsychosocial needs.


b. Performsa complete newborn physical examination assessment of gestationalage and can distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.


c. Performsdiagnostic and therapeutic procedures as necessary. Ordersappropriate lab tests and x-rays. Interprets findings andconsults with physicians as needed.


d. Basedon physical examination and other data formulates and implementsa plan of care with expected outcomes. Formulates and documents aproblem list in accordance with the plan of care. Evaluates andrevises daily the plan as needed. Records patient history planof care orders and progress notes as needed which includedongoing evaluation and treatments. Participates in departmentteam talks and daily patient safety huddles and rounds.


e. Writesprescriptions as needed in accordance with the Minnesota Board ofnursing guidelines.

  1. Communicateswith the attending physician parents nursing staff and othermembers of the health care team appropriate information about thenewborns diagnosis plan of care and prognosis.

  2. Ordersinterprets and evaluates initial diagnostic tests to identifyand assess infants clinical problems and health care needs.

  3. Providescomplex care coordination which includes managing a variety ofancillary services pre-operative plans discharge planning andclinician referrals. Provides clinical direction to nursing staffregarding the continued care of patients. Follows through withnursing staff to ensure patient receives recommended care.

  1. Willattend all deliveries where requested with support of NICULEVEL II RN or NRP trained obstetric RN.

  2. Facilitatesthe transfer of neonates to/from other hospitals.
