Job Summary

Job Title: MCHS Assistant Principal of Non-Traditional Programs


Reports To: Principal Michigan City High School (MCHS)

General Purpose:
Michigan City Area Schools is seeking a dedicated Assistant Principal to oversee our Non-Traditional Programs. Operating as a school within a school under the leadership of the MCHS Principal this role provides critical support and flexible learning environments for students who find success outside the traditional school setting. Additionally this administrator will serve as the designated hearing officer for district-wide expulsion proceedings.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Leadership & School Within a School Management

  • Administer the districts non-traditional learning initiatives including the Pathways to Graduation program the SCALE (School and Community Alternative Learning Environment) program for grades 6-12 and the MCAS Great Lakes Virtual Academy.
  • Lead these programs under the direction of the MCHS Principal ensuring effective integration into the broader high school community while preserving their unique alternative learning environments.
  • Collaborate with elementary middle and high school principals to support student transitions identify appropriate interventions and ensure continuity of services for students participating in non-traditional learning programs
School Culture and Climate
  • Foster a safe supportive and inclusive learning environment for students and staff.
  • Promote and model cultural competence equity and respect through leadership practices and professional learning.
  • Build a culture of trust accountability and high expectations.
Student and Family Engagement
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with students and families.
  • Promote active communication and partnership with parents and guardians.
  • Foster positive connections between the school and the broader Michigan City community.

District Discipline & Expulsion Hearings

  • Expulsion Management: Serve as the primary administrative officer for district-wide expulsion hearings ensuring fair compliant and thorough proceedings.
  • Manage the Restoration Program: Oversee disciplinary placements specifically designed for students with disabilities in grades 6-12 ensuring adherence to special education laws and district policy.
Operations and Management
  • Oversee daily school operations including safety scheduling discipline and building management.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies state regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Supervise the maintenance of accurate school records and documentation.
  • Collaborate with central office departments on transportation special services and other operational needs.

Education and Experience

  • Masters degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Valid Indiana Principal license or eligibility for licensure
  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership experience at the building or district level preferred
  • Evidence of improving student outcomes and leading school improvement initiatives
