NASI Safety Research Engineer

Summary
Supports the development evaluation and validation of Subaru vehicle safety performance especially for crashworthiness and preventive safety (e.g. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems ADAS).

Supports Subaru development by documenting and attending relevant conferences/meetings reviewing and analyzing safety test data and analyzing real-world accident data. Provides engineering support as point of contact for meetings and/or negotiation with entities including test centers such as Transportation Research Center Proving Grounds (TRC) and regulatory agencies such as Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) etc.

Attends research and compliance tests conducted by the IIHS NHTSA-contracted test labs and research centers; those test evaluation and validation events are conducted in California (CA) Virginia (VA) Michigan (MI) and New York (NY) etc. among other locations.

Job Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

Data Analysis & Technical Reporting (35%)

• Performs analysis of real-world accident data (from sources such as Fatality Analysis Reporting System FARS Crash Investigation Sampling System CISS etc.) to investigate future safety development and advance our safety performance.
• Functions as the resource for these data collections and fields requests for new analyses.
• Generates memos/reports and presents results to pertinent parties.

Engineering Meeting and Issue Negotiation (25%)

• Serves as lead in reviewing and amending engineering/technical meeting material generated by Subaru Safety Engineering in Japan (Subaru Corporation SBR).
• Serves as SBR Safety Engineerings main point of contact to facilitate and assist explanation of technical issues with concerned parties such as Insurance Institute for Highway Safety IIHS National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA etc. for the following purposes:
  • Recovering from situations where mass production vehicles could not get expectation results
  • Gaining advance information on future safety evaluations for development in SBR)

Attendance of Safety Testing (15%)

• Attends tests covering safety research and vehicle performance conducted by third parties.
• Provides contractual and logistical support to third party through defining deliverables and logistics.
• Facilitates on-site communication between SBR and third party.

Information Gathering & Technical Reporting (15%)

• Researches (through internet - police departments news etc.) and acquires real-world crash data (about 40-70 police crash reports per year).
• Reviews data and provides input towards Subarus future safety development.

Attending External Meetings & Technical Reporting (10%)

• Attends multiple conferences (e.g. SAE Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine AAAM International Research Council on the Biomechanics of Injury IRCOBI Stapp Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE) and technical meetings (e.g. SAE Lighting Group) covering new regulations assessment methods and/or new research.
• Documents and shares information gained.

Additional Responsibilities

• Builds strong cooperative relationships with Subaru Development team in Japan to understand their requests and positions. (5%)
• Generates and shares personal meeting memo for applicable meetings with third parties. Generates weekly memo on current work focus/items. (5%)
• Acts as point of contact with outside parties (e.g. test centers vendors) in discussions concerning contract contents testing schedule deliverables and invoice timing. (5%)
• For analysis of data possesses some familiarity with programming language (e.g. Python SQL) and shows willingness to learn SAS in order to gain intermediate understanding of software. (5%)

Education

• Bachelors Degree in an engineering discipline (science technology engineering or mathematics STEM subjects) Required And
• Bachelors Degree in mechanical or automotive engineering Preferred

Work Experience

• At least 6-8 years of experience in automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or related agency for evaluating safety performance Required Or
• At least 8-10 years of experience in automotive OEM or related supplier for development/designing/engineering body Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) airbags etc. Required

Skills

• Good management and communication skills. Ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Strong skills in Microsoft Office and databases.
• Automotive technical knowledge and experience.
• Japanese culture and language understanding Preferred

Skills (Additional)

• Statistics knowledge and programing skill (Python) Preferred

Work Environment
Office Location: Pennsauken NJ
Compensation: The recruiting base salary range for this full-time position is $95000 $105000 / year. Individual pay is determined based on job-related skills experience and education. This role is bonuseligible (Internal Job Grade: P3).
