Job Summary

Accountability:Performs engine operation on-ground duties equipment maintenance and other assigned duties to assist in an efficient switching operation. Expected to progress in skill and responsibilities of train operations over time. This position will support multiple locations on a rotational basis and may be assigned to start-up environments staffing shortages or training needs.

Travel Requirement: This role operates on a two weeks on / two weeks off travel rotation to locations requiring operational support. The employees current location will be considered their home location. A 40-hour weekly guarantee applies while on assignment. Per diem and travel expenses are covered by the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in all phases of the safe daily operation of trains.
  • Operates equipment according to company policies procedures and practices in all areas including equipment usage and maintenance safety (OSHA) and DOT requirements.
  • Operates track switches couples cars and works on freight trains in yard operations and on the road.
  • Moves and aligns various parts of rail equipment to create or build trains.
  • Reviews instructions from Operations Manager dispatchers and yardmasters and discusses with train crew
  • Multi-tasking must be able to perform several tasks safely that will require pulling controlling and maneuvering onto and off of equipment.
  • Works with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
  • Increasing responsibilities expected and required including the ability to handle locomotive engineering duties upon training eligibility.
  • Employees are subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per DOT requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Specialized or Technical Knowledge or Education and Experience:

  • Must be mechanically inclined and have basic reading and math skills.
  • Must have the ability to develop teamwork and work with all levels of personnel in achieving train-handling objectives.
  • Must hold a valid drivers license and be able to operate a company vehicle.
  • Dual-certified as both Conductor and Engineer
  • Clean safety record for of 12 months
  • QMI certification is preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Mobility to participate in frequent travel in the assigned region
  • Requires pulling controlling and maneuvering on to and off equipment
  • Perform a rapid horizontal hand torque action with a force of 150 lbs
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 lbs
  • Able to walk climb and maintain balance on ladders and uneven terrain in a safe manner

Environmental Conditions: Performs duties in primarily outside environments in and around moving locomotives railcars vehicles and equipment. Frequent exposure to weather elements: appropriate PPE required.
