Department Culture & Structure: North Haven Middle School is seeking a dynamic mathematics teacher to join our collaborative student-centered department our grades 68 program math faculty members work closely within interdisciplinary grade-level teams and are led by a full-time Grades 612 Mathematics Department Coordinator. New teachers to the district are warmly welcomed and supported through an interactive New Teacher Orientation series and an assigned professional mentor.
Schedule & Planning: Faculty benefit from robust professional planning time integrated within the middle school schedule including dedicated daily unassigned preparation periods and common collaborative team meeting intervals to optimize instructional delivery and student success.
POSITION PURPOSE
Under the general supervision of the School Principal and the Grades 612 Mathematics Department Coordinator the Middle School Mathematics Teacher will develop students skills mathematical competencies and academic fluency. The educator will implement instructional experiences aligned directly to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSS-M) fostering sound reasoning critical thinking and structured problem-solving skills to prepare all students for high school coursework and a global society.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Teaches knowledge skills and conceptual progressions in mathematics in accordance with the prescribed North Haven Public Schools district curriculum.
Translates math standards and curriculum units into sequential differentiated learning experiences that engage challenge and accommodate diverse student learning styles.
Promotes a classroom environment that is physically and emotionally safe structurally organized and highly conducive to individualized small-group and whole-class instruction.
Instructs foundational middle school math courses ranging from numerical frameworks and rational numbers up to advanced Pre-Algebra and high-school-level Algebra 1 concepts for accelerated 8th-grade pathways.
Utilizes data-driven practices by maintaining familiarity with district diagnostics and Connecticut state standardized tests specifically utilizing the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) tools and Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs) to track progress and maximize student achievement.
Conducts ongoing formative and summative assessments of student learning modifying instructional pacing and methodology to fit individual needs including provision of designated accommodations for students with special needs and English Language Learners (ELL).
Organizes and maintains an accurate legally compliant system for record-keeping grading attendance and reporting of student achievements via district data platforms.
Encourages proactive parental and guardian involvement ensuring clear professional and consistent communication regarding student progress behavior and academic development. Establishes and enforces constructive classroom behavior standards aligned with school policies to maintain a functional respectful and focused learning atmosphere.
Collaborates regularly with professional peers within grade-level teams the math department and faculty committees to implement best practices and maintain vertical curriculum alignment. Selects requisitions and maintains an accurate inventory of appropriate textbooks instructional aids manipulatives technology software and equipment.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Performs other related tasks and professional responsibilities as assigned by the middle school principal department coordinator or central office administrators as designated by the superintendent of schools.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Pedagogical Mastery: In-depth knowledge of modern mathematics teaching methods differentiated instruction strategies and student-centered structures (e.g. guided math mathematical modeling or three-act tasks).
Curriculum Competency: Solid command of the structural math progressions across Grades 68 as outlined by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS-M).
Data Literacy: Proficiency in analyzing assessment data from SBAC interim assessments and benchmarks to formulate effective instructional action plans.
Legal Awareness: Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding public education student privacy (FERPA) and specialized services (IEP/504 plans).
Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively constructively and empathetically with middle school students families colleagues and administration.
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE

Must hold or be eligible for a valid Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE)
teacher certification with appropriate endorsement:

Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operators license or reliable personal transit.
Education
Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable
mathematics or educational discipline.
Masters Degree in Mathematics Curriculum or Secondary/Elementary Education
preferred.
Experience
Successful prior student teaching internship or certified teaching experience within a middle school setting is preferred.
