Under the direction of the Manager of Language Services the interpreter provides accurate oral information between speakers of two different languages in the consecutive and/or simultaneous (if explicitly requested) and/or sight translation modes in compliance with BSMH policy and procedures particularly relating to client confidentiality. The interpreter understands and abides by all published Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics for Interpreters.
Essential Job Functions:
- Renders messages from one language to another accurately without omissions and additions and maintaining message content context and style as much as possible to facilitate effective communication.
- Strengthen personalize and enhance the relationship between the patient and the staff/provider by facilitating communication mediating cultural and linguistic barriers to care and assuring patient understanding.
- Adheres to strict guidelines from the National Standards of Practice and National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.
- Assists with varying departmental activities and projects as requested by departments leadership; and performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Provides occasional services outside of normal working hours on as-needed basis and/or for staff meetings and continuous education.
- Maintains professional demeanor in presentation and communication style. Adheres to dress code guidelines.
- Follows ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information and maintain client confidentiality pursuant to protocols established by the contract HIPAA and industry standards.
- Knowledge of industry specific terminology referencing glossaries and training materials.
- Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to contribute to successful outcomes.
- Ability to perform sight translation reading aloud documents in a language other than that in which they were written.
- Ability to interpret using consecutive and/or simultaneous (if explicitly requested) mode of interpretation.
- Serves as a Cultural Navigator to explain and interpret idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances.
- The ability to travel to any of BSMH area facilities as needed and requested.
- Maintains timely and complete documentation per BSMH process on all interpreter encounters to include all relevant purpose duration location parties involved patient refusals as well as accurate records of productivity mileage and other requested information.
- Conducts rounds on LEP (Limited English Proficient) and culturally diverse patients in local acute facilities to assess Language and communication needs. Follow patients through length of stay to include discharge and maintain communication and collaboration with patient care team.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum Required Education: High School diploma or GED required.
- Minimum Preferred Education: 4 year/Bachelors Degree Specialty/Major: Foreign Languages Business or Health Administration
- Language Requirements: Bilingual:
- Licensure/Certification Required: National Certification for Healthcare Interpreters
- Minimum Years and Type of Experience Required: Minimum of 3 years interpreting experience in a medial setting. Completion of an interpreting course: 40 hours minimum
- Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required: Fluency in English and language you are hired to interpret(both oral and written). Experience with individuals from divers cultures/socio-economic backgrounds. Understands variety of regional accents and linguistic styles and registers.
