Mesa Associates is seeking a Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer to support the design analysis procurement construction and implementation of modifications at commercial nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities. The successful candidate will prepare and coordinate mechanical engineering deliverables perform field investigations and work with engineers designers project managers clients and vendors in a controlled design environment.

This position is intended for an engineer who can execute assigned mechanical work with limited direction and assume increasing responsibility for technical scope quality schedule and coordination. The selected candidate may be hired at the mid-Level based on relevant experience technical depth and demonstrated independence.

Work Arrangement and Travel

  • Hybrid schedule with a minimum of three days per week in the office typically Tuesday through Thursday.
  • Ability to travel to plant sites when required normally approximately 6-8 days per month.
  • Ability to support longer field assignments implementation activities or outage work when project needs require.
  • Ability to satisfy client and site-access requirements including unescorted nuclear plant access where applicable.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant mechanical engineering or mechanical design experience.
  • Experience preparing or supporting engineering calculations evaluations specifications design drawings reports or equivalent technical deliverables.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and applicable codes standards regulations and accepted engineering practices.
  • Ability to conduct field walkdowns evaluate existing plant configuration and translate field conditions into design requirements.
  • Effective technical writing verbal communication organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to coordinate work with engineers designers project managers clients vendors and other engineering disciplines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward professional licensure.
  • Experience supporting commercial nuclear Department of Energy power generation chemical/process defense or another highly regulated industry.
  • Experience preparing or supporting engineering change packages design change packages equivalency evaluations or configuration-controlled plant modifications.
  • Experience with piping systems valves pumps pressure equipment HVAC heat transfer equipment or other mechanical plant systems and components.
  • Familiarity with applicable mechanical codes and standards which may include ASME ANSI API and NFPA requirements depending on project scope.
  • Experience reviewing vendor drawings technical submittals equipment data and procurement specifications.
  • Experience with one or more engineering design tools such as AutoCAD MicroStation Plant3D Inventor Solidworks ReCap FARO Scene Vault or comparable software.
  • Experience working directly with operating nuclear clients fabricators construction organizations or equipment vendors.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare mechanical calculations technical evaluations specifications drawings reports and design change documentation for nuclear projects.
  • Support the design and modification of piping systems mechanical equipment HVAC systems pressure-retaining components and associated plant systems as assigned.
  • Review design inputs plant drawings calculations procedures specifications photographs vendor information and field data to establish the existing design and configuration.
  • Conduct and document field walkdowns to verify plant conditions identify interfaces obtain measurements and support constructability and installation planning.
  • Coordinate mechanical requirements and interfaces with civil electrical instrumentation and control procurement construction and project management personnel.
  • Develop or support engineering change packages and ensure deliverables are consistent with project requirements applicable procedures codes standards and quality expectations.
  • Respond to internal client vendor construction and implementation comments; document resolutions and incorporate approved changes int design deliverables.
  • Review vendor drawings technical submittals equipment data and procurement documentation for compliance with project and design requirements.
  • Support project scoping labor estimates schedules design assumptions and identification of required inputs for assigned mechanical work.
  • Identify technical risks missing information field conflicts constructability concerns and schedule impacts and communicate them promptly to the Project Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Perform design reviews and checking activates appropriate to assigned qualifications and experience.
  • Provide technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers and share lessons learned from completed work.
  • Support client meetings vendor discussions construction activities testing implementation and outage work as required.
  • Maintain complete accurate and traceable engineering records in accordance with company and client procedures.

Successful Candidates Will

  • Demonstrate sound engineering judgment and recognize when additional review or technical support is required.
  • Interpret and apply codes standards client procedures design criteria and regulatory requirements to assigned work.
  • Produce clear accurate organized and technically defensible engineering documentation.
  • Work effectively in a matrixed multidisciplinary organization and communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Adapt to changing project priorities and resolve problems in field design fabrication and construction environments.
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks communicate status and concerns early and meet quality schedule and budget expectations.
