Mechanic Position-Transportation Department


RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation


GENERAL SUMMARY: The Mechanic position is responsible for keeping the Districts vehicles in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problem or interruptions to the educational program.


ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: By having a vast background of mechanical knowledge the individual in this position will be able to analyze and locate the source of mechanical trouble in the Districts vehicles.

  1. Responsible for the diagnosis assignment and repair of the Districts fleet.
  2. Assist in maintaining a current inventory of supplies and equipment.
  3. Assist in establishing an efficient and effective system of routine maintenance and preventative care.
  4. Assist in setting up and supervising a system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies and keeping records and inventories in cooperation with the Director of Transportation.
  5. Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas.
  6. Reports any and all unsafe and hazardous conditions.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or the Assistant Director of Transportation.
  8. Assist in ensuring the garage and areas surrounding the facility are clean and functional and assist with snow removal.
  9. Retain certification attend training opportunities and meetings as required and remain current on school bus laws and regulations.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School diploma or GED equivalency.

2. Associates Degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Mechanics from an approved

program or licensed diesel mechanic in the State of Michigan with certification in the

following areas:

a. Drive Train

b. Suspension and steering

c. Diesel engines

d. Brakes

e. Electrical/Electronic Systems

f. Preventive maintenance inspection

3. Minimum of three years of successful experience as an auto mechanic bus experience

preferred.

4. Demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring an

understanding of and proficiency in transportation mechanical repair.

5. Must have a CDL with air brake passenger endorsement preferred.

6. Must have School Bus Certification or willingness to obtain.

7. Demonstrated experience with computerized garage systems.

8. Ability to work well with diverse groups and individuals.

9. Excellent communication skills both oral and written.

10. Ability to react to change productively.

11. Ability to prioritize organize and manage ones daily work schedule.

12. Ability to understand and follow directions both oral and written.

13. Willing to receive additional training provided by the District to improve skills.

14. Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner.

15. Ability to exercise independent judgment.


TESTING: Qualified candidates must show proof of certification.
