Job Summary
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Prevention Initiative (AAIMM) Doula Program pairs Black pregnant individuals with Black doulas who provide each client with prenatal labor and delivery and postpartum education support and advocacy in an effort to reduce maternal stress and improve maternal satisfaction and birth outcomes. Funded by a California Home Visiting Program (CHVP) grant AAIMM doulas will promote joyous births by serving pregnant people with dignity and respect ensuring mom and baby receive optimal clinical care and providing resources and support for infant and maternal well-being.
The program is funded through December 31 2026 with the possibility of extension.
This position will need to report to the following LA County DPH worksite as needed: 750 N. Alameda St. Los Angeles CA 90012
Employment is provided by Heluna Health.
The pay rate for this position is $36.29 per hour.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide prenatal visits continuous labor birth and immediate postpartum lactation support and postpartum visits for Black birthing persons within priority SPAs of Los Angeles County
- Maintain a caseload of up to 3 clients/monthly.
- Outreach Coordination included but not limited to Childbirth Education Meet the Doula Nights AAIMM and community events
- Assist Medi-Cal eligible/member with enrollment in the Medi-Cal program (i.e. assist with application process referral help Medi-Cal eligible/member review Medi-Cal related documents for enrolling in Medi-Cal).
- Develop and provide resource linkages for clients and their families.
- Assist Medi-Cal eligible/member to receive shelter housing or other basic needs by connecting them with ECM CHWs or home visitors.
- Develop and assist administration with identifying and maintaining current resources for doulas and clients.
- Assist Medi-Cal eligible pregnant people and children in accessing quality health care services.
- Provide pertinent resources to support pregnant and postpartum birthing people in areas of need.
- Participate in case conferences with clinical team as needed.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Working knowledge of racial equity and perinatal health including the social determinants of health and their impact on maternal and infant outcomes.
- Experience supporting birthing persons as a birth or full-spectrum doula.
- Demonstrated ability to provide trauma-informed culturally responsive and client-centered care to pregnant and parenting individuals.
- Excellent communication skills including professional phone etiquette and the ability to engage effectively with community members pregnant persons families clinical providers and community-based organizations.
- Ability to build trust and maintain professional boundaries while working with vulnerable and justice-impacted populations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to maintain accurate documentation and reporting requirements.
- Maintain compliance with Health Officer Orders for Health Care Workers as a condition of employment. Such orders may include future requests for up-to-date vaccinations and/or mask wearing.
Driving Requirements
- Must be willing and able to travel throughout Los Angeles County to attend meetings provide technical assistance conduct outreach and engage with community partners healthcare providers doulas and managed care plans.
- Travel may constitute a significant portion of work time and require driving between multiple service locations including community-based organizations healthcare facilities and County offices.
- Must be available to attend occasional early morning evening or weekend meetings trainings and community events as needed.
- Possession of a valid California Drivers License reliable transportation and proof of automobile insurance.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience providing culturally responsive support to pregnant birthing postpartum and parenting individuals as a birth or full-spectrum doula.
- Medi-Cal approved doula certification or eligibility for Medi-Cal enrollment as a doula provider.
- Training experience or certification in perinatal mental health trauma-informed care and lactation education and postpartum infant feeding support.
- Experience conducting outreach facilitating childbirth education and connecting participants to community-based social service and re-entry resources.
Certificates/Licenses/Clearances
- A valid California drivers license proof of vehicle insurance and reliable transportation or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
- Successful clearance of a LA County Live Scan (DOJ) background check required.
- CLES trauma-informed care and full spectrum doula training.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The CHVP/DPSS Doula Coordinator works in a fast-paced hybrid environment that combines program administration staff supervision community engagement and cross-system collaboration. The position regularly interacts with doulas home visiting staff healthcare providers community-based organizations and County partners to support the delivery of culturally responsive perinatal services to pregnant and parenting individuals.
Work is performed in both office and community settings and includes virtual and in-person meetings trainings site visits and outreach activities throughout Los Angeles County. The position requires frequent communication problem-solving and coordination across multiple programs and stakeholders as well as the ability to manage competing priorities and respond to emerging program needs. Travel throughout Los Angeles County is required to attend meetings trainings community events and program-related activities.
