The primary responsibility of the Materials Handler is to receive and deliver supplies to the appropriate departments within the hospital in a timely and professional manner. They must have a good overall working knowledge of computers and supply chain operations. The handler should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and can lift 50 pounds. The material handler will be responsible for receiving supplies into the supply chain management system and scanning the packages upon delivery to final destinations. The expectation is these individuals will be able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Job Summary

The Material Handler is responsible for receiving processing and delivering supplies throughout the hospital in a timely accurate and professional manner. This role ensures efficient supply chain operations by managing incoming and outgoing shipments maintaining inventory accuracy and supporting hospital departments in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Distribution

  • Sort and stage received packages by delivery route.
  • Deliver supplies to designated departments ensuring accurate chain-of-custody scanning.
  • Prioritize time-sensitive overnight and urgent deliveries.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of receiving and staging areas.
  • Ensure package integrity including handling of refrigerated or sterile items.
  • Safely operate material handling equipment.
  • Inspect outbound shipments for accuracy and proper labeling.

Receiving

  • Process incoming shipments accurately in supply chain (SC) systems.
  • Label and prepare shipments for internal distribution.
  • Unload and verify deliveries according to policy.
  • Maintain inventory rotation using FIFO (First-In First-Out).
  • Research and resolve missing or lost shipments.
  • Maintain a safe clean and organized receiving dock.

Equipment Distribution / Pick-Up

  • Prepare and transport medical supplies and equipment.
  • Manage inbound and outbound shipments efficiently.

Mail Services (as applicable)

  • Sort process and deliver incoming mail.
  • Prepare outbound mail and coordinate vendor pickup.
  • Provide customer support related to mail services.

Customer Service

  • Deliver excellent customer service and resolve service issues per policy.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments.

Technology

  • Utilize supply chain software for tracking issuing and inventory management.
  • Perform accurate data entry and system updates.
  • Use Microsoft Office and internal systems effectively.
  • Complete required training and compliance modules timely.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all hospital safety and infection control policies.
  • Adhere to department procedures and regulatory requirements.

Training & Support

  • Assist in training new team members as a preceptor.
  • Support departmental projects and initiatives.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in supply chain logistics or healthcare environment preferred.
  • Basic to intermediate computer skills required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular walking standing and material handling required.
