The Maintenance Technician - Mechanic position supports our NASAcustomer on the Marshall Engineering Technicians and Trades Support contract (METTS). This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing mechanical components for CNC Machines Mills Lathes etc within a large machine shop. They will install repair rebuild and maintain in efficient operating condition a wide variety of machines. They will work on the repairs and maintenance for the machines in a large machine shop that includes 3 phase electricity and high voltage.

This position may require occasional overtime and may include second or third shift support for 24/7 onsite or on-call support based on customer needs and contract requirements.

Summary of duties include but are not limited to:

• Examining machines and mechanical equipment to diagnose source of trouble
• Dismantling or partly dismantling machines and performing repairs that mainly involve the use of hand tools in scraping and fitting parts
• Checking wear on bearings gears belts chains couplings and shafts
• Replacing broken or defective parts with items obtained from stock
• Lubricating moving parts adjusting alignments and replacing worn mechanical components
• Dismantling machines to replace or rebuild components such as pumps compressors gearboxes conveyors and hydraulic/pneumatic cylinders
• Communicating specifications for major repairs or parts that are needed
• Cleaning machines maintaining shop areas organizing parts and tools and supporting installation of new equipment from a mechanical standpoint

Required Minimum Education/Experience/Certifications:

• In general the work of a Maintenance Technician - Mechanic requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

Preferred Experience/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/IT Skills/Certifications:

• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Previous experience with NASA

Work Environment:

• Environmentally controlled heated and cooled shop area subject to machinery noise
• Laboratory test environments test stands possible confined spaces
• Occasional outdoor work

Physical Environment/Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

• Ability to lift up to twenty pounds on an occasional basis
• Sit or stand for extended periods of time
• May require walking bending climbing stairs stooping lifting and navigating shop/machine work areas
• Must be able to bend stoop or lift occasionally with or without reasonable accommodation.
• All positions supporting the METTS III contract are contingent upon successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter. The need for these screenings is determined based on the outcomes of the Safety Health and Environmental Job Assessment Questionnaire.

Other: This position is subject to a pre-employment background check. Must meet eligibility for a Public Trust background investigation for government issues credentials and IT access/applicants must be able to pass a security background check per Redstone Arsenal/MSFC requirements.
