Position Overview

Waltham Public Schools is seeking a passionate creative and student-centered High School Visual Art Teacher to join our Fine and Performing Arts Department and high school teaching team for a parental leave replacement from August 31 2026 through early November 2026. This position will have a photography focus and will support students through engaging standards-based visual arts instruction that fosters creativity technical skill development critical thinking and artistic expression.

The ideal candidate will create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment where students can develop foundational and intermediate photography skills explore visual storytelling and engage with diverse artistic traditions and perspectives. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to inclusive standards-based instruction and the ability to support the needs of all learners.

A valid Massachusetts teaching license in Visual Arts is required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engaging standards-based visual arts lessons appropriate for high school students with a focus on photography instruction.
  • Teach foundational and intermediate photography concepts and techniques including composition lighting camera use digital editing visual storytelling and critique.
  • Foster creativity craftsmanship self-expression and artistic confidence in student artists.
  • Create a positive inclusive and supportive classroom environment that encourages exploration collaboration and creative risk-taking.
  • Introduce students to photographers artistic movements and visual cultures from diverse historical and global perspectives.
  • Differentiate instruction to support students with varied learning needs interests backgrounds and abilities.
  • Assess student growth through projects portfolios critiques reflections and classroom participation.
  • Organize and display student work to celebrate student creativity and learning.
  • Maintain and manage classroom materials photography equipment technology and supplies to ensure safe and organized learning environments.
  • Communicate effectively with students families colleagues and administrators to support student growth and engagement.
  • Participate in collaborative team meetings and school-based responsibilities as appropriate during the leave period.
  • Incorporate technology and contemporary practices into instruction as appropriate.
Qualifications
Education

Bachelors degree in Art Education Fine Arts Photography or a related field required. Masters degree preferred.

Certification

Valid Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Visual Arts.

Experience

Prior experience teaching visual art at the high school level preferred.
Experience teaching photography and digital media preferred.
Experience working with diverse student populations and inclusive classroom practices preferred.

Skills
  • Knowledge of high school visual art instruction and photography curriculum.
  • Proficiency in photography techniques digital editing tools and related technology.
  • Ability to create engaging culturally responsive and student-centered learning experiences.
  • Strong classroom management communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students families and colleagues.
  • Commitment to fostering creativity inclusion and equitable access to arts education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching photography digital imaging or media arts courses.
  • Experience supporting multilingual learners and students with diverse learning needs.
  • Background as a practicing artist photographer or creative professional.
  • Experience integrating technology into visual arts instruction.
  • Experience facilitating student critiques portfolio development or exhibitions.
