This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit which develops Blue Origins Blue Moon landers and related products. This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit which develops Blue Origins multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origins mission of having millions of people living and working in space we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. This role is part of the zero-g propellant management team which is rethinking how space systems are designed with a high-performance architecture efficient reusability and rapid design iteration.

We are looking for a Cryogenic Responsible Engineer with strong CAD design and drafting skills to support the model-and-drawing side of our cryogenic propellant management hardware. You will support technical requirement development and contribute design/drafting execution on challenging cryogenic technical problems from concept-level design through release-ready Creo models and drawings. Work will span the life cycle of the system: definition interfaces conceptual design detailed design component development assembly verification and operation. You will work with internal and external suppliers to design model and detail components that will take us to the moon!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work on complex cryogenic subsystems and components as part of the Zero-g Propellant Management Product Team (IPT) escalating ambiguous or high-risk problems to senior engineers as needed.
  • Support hardware ownership from definition through delivery contributing to design verification and integration activities for assigned components.
  • Track internal and external procurements and hardware dependencies to support subsystem delivery schedules.
  • Contribute to the diverse range of fluids propulsion design engineer tasks supporting trade studies component design/integration first-order analysis test support and supplier interface as opportunities arise.
  • Participate in internal and external cryogenic technology development meetings.
  • Develop modify and release engineering models assemblies and drawings in Creo Parametric for cryogenic propellant management hardware including valves manifolds tubing pressure vessels and support structure.
  • Generate fabrication and assembly drawings in accordance with Blue Origin drafting standards and applicable GD&T requirements.
  • Apply Model Based Definition (MBD) practices where applicable embedding PMI (datums notes finish callouts) on the model for programs and hardware where MBD is the controlled deliverable.
  • Follow Blue Origin CAD modeling conventions and Windchill configuration management requirements; maintain product data and support changes through the CN-controlled release process.
  • Create Interface Control Models and Interface Control Drawings for cryogenic fluid system hardware.
  • Deliver geometry to analysis teams to support Finite Element Models.
  • Support hardware drawing release manufacturing plan development and integration onto the vehicle.
  • Perform model checks drawing checks and participate in design reviews to ensure conformance with applicable engineering safety and program standards before release.
  • Support vendor RFQs fabrication inspection and proof-test packages by producing associated deliverables (BOMs weldment details machined-part details inspection drawings as-built redlines).

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Aerospace Engineering Mechanical Engineering Physics or related technical subject area.
  • 5 years of experience in cryogenic fluids and mechanical systems/components.
  • Experience supporting the development integration or certification of aerospace systems for flight.
  • Experience with fluid/gas components (i.e. solenoid valves directional valves manifolds regulators pressure vessels and instrumentation).
  • Experience with Cryogenic Fluid Management techniques and technologies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Creo Parametric for parts assemblies weldments and drawings.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (per ASME Y14.5) and the ability to apply it to fabricated machined and welded fluid system hardware.
  • Experience working within a formal configuration management / engineering change / release process (CN ECO ECN or equivalent).
  • Solid grasp of common manufacturing materials processes and tolerance/stack-up analysis sufficient to produce manufacturable drawings without back-and-forth.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a fast-paced dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent verbal written and graphical communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in Aerospace Engineering Mechanical Engineering Physics or related technical subject area.
  • Human-rated space vehicle experience.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience (ANSYS preferred).
  • Experience with upper stages and spacecraft.
  • Experience with the entire life cycle of a propulsion and fluid system.
  • Experience with Windchill PDM in a production environment including workflow revisioning and BOM management.
  • Experience with Model Based Definition (MBD) and PMI authoring including familiarity with the trade-offs between fully-defined MBD models and reduced-content drawings.
  • Experience drafting structural weldments to AWS D1.1 / D17.1 including weld symbol literacy and weld-prep detailing.
  • Background in DFM/DFA principles as they apply to CAD design choices.
  • Prior aerospace defense or other high-reliability industry experience.

Base Pay Range for:

CA applicants is $121023.00 - $169432.20 CO applicants is $110938.00 - $155312.85 WA applicants is $121023.00 - $169432.20
