TITLE

Librarian Collections Projects and Resources

JOB SUMMARY

Performs professional librarian work in managing the librarys electronic resources cataloging physical and electronic resources and leading project management for the Collections Strategies and Discovery (CSD) department. Work involves knowledge of current electronic and physical resource cataloging and integrated library system (ILS) technologies (including hardware and software) the ability to support and maintain the librarys collection and discovery tools and the application of professional principles and practices to ensure access to library resources. The position utilizes project management skills to collaborate with others in successfully carrying out library projects involving departmental resources and library collections. Work is performed under general supervision with a high degree of self-motivation and individual initiative and performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system in accordance with the University Policies and Procedures and is based on the accomplishment of defined objectives and the effectiveness of the assigned library functions.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Assistant Dean Integrated Library Resources & Support (ILRS)

Supervises: Student Assistants

ESSENTIAL DUTIES -May include but not limited to the following:

  • Serves as a direct contact for all aspects of library electronic resources including subscriptions e-books streaming media and other electronic packages.

  • Activates deactivates troubleshoots and loads records into the librarys online library system.

  • Performs original and copy cataloging for physical and electronic resources in all formats ensuring accuracy and consistency of bibliographic and authority records.

  • Maintains awareness of and applies current cataloging and metadata standards (including MARC21 RDA LCSH and related schemas).

  • Collaborates with the ILRS department to ensure discoverability and accessibility of library resources across the library system.

  • Works closely with CSD colleagues to process cataloging and activate newly acquired library materials.

  • Performs data analysis of packages and collections tracking and loading resource updates communicating with external vendors and remediation of incoming records through automated processes that conform to local and national standards. Gathers analyzes and interprets electronic resource usage statistics and turnaways.

  • Reviews and participates in problem resolution with public services collections and library technology staff; resolves or forwards urgent problems as appropriate.

  • Performs electronic maintenance work such as link checking maintaining the database A-Z list and distributing problems and questions to appropriate staff or vendor.

  • Regularly interacts with vendors and publishers regarding set-up access and cataloging issues.

  • Establishes and documents processes and best practices for the processing and maintaining of physical and electronic library resources.

  • Monitors trends related to resource access metadata standards discoverability data harvesting usage analysis and preservation to enhance library services.

  • Hires supervises trains and evaluates student assistants.

  • Communicates with library staff regarding technical problems catalog updates and new database additions.

  • Maintains working knowledge of metadata creation tools (MarcEdit XML Dublin Core etc.) and participates in remediation of records through automated processes that conform to local and national standards.

  • Collaborates with the CSD department to coordinate the servicing of the librarys ILS regarding tasks workflows collections and portfolios; is a certified administrator for librarys interactive systems.

  • Understands standards protocols electronic data interchange (EDI) application programming interfaces (API) open URL/Z39.50 and metadata harvesting.

  • Manages URLs links catalog records and logins to uphold licensing and metadata agreements.

  • Collaborates with the TWU community to recommend electronic resource purchases.

  • Assists in the development of library policies and procedures.

  • Participates in discussions and gathers information from professional colleagues and library associations through professional communication forums.

  • Contributes to the collection of statistical data to inform the departments services and activities.

  • Works in collaboration with other Library staff University departments local universities and the larger community in developing new initiatives.

  • Contributes to the planning development coordination and implementation of library initiatives.

  • Serves on relevant University committees and library teams.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Represents the TWU Libraries on university committees and at campus events.

  • Prepares monthly semester and special reports and documentation as requested.

  • Carries out unit-related special projects.

  • Performs other duties as requested.

EDUCATION

Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution. Background in department-related discipline strongly preferred. Additional job-related experience and/or education may substitute for the required MLS on a year-for-year basis. MLS must be obtained within two years of hire.

EXPERIENCE

Two years of experience in a related library service area or closely related field preferred. Experience with ExLibris Alma/Primo preferred. Cataloging experience (original and copy) in an academic or research library environment preferred.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

  • Knowledge of the concepts and issues relating to the lifecycle of both physical and electronic resources.

  • Knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards including MARC21 RDA LCSH and related national guidelines.

  • Knowledge of electronic resource management link resolvers and proxy server functionality.

  • Knowledge of cataloging and metadata creation tools such as MarcEdit Dublin Core and XML.

  • Knowledge of electronic resource content models emerging formats acquisition methods and licensing.

  • Knowledge of office practices methods and workflow for service needs.

  • Excellent computer skills including spreadsheet expertise and preparing reports.

  • Excellent customer service skills and the commitment to serve students faculty and staff both externally and internally

  • Excellent interpersonal research and time management skills.

  • Excellent problem solving skills.

  • Skills in using the Google suite of office products.

  • Ability to troubleshoot electronic access subscription-related and discovery-related resource issues.

  • Ability to gather analyze evaluate and interpret information.

  • Ability to organize work effectively conceptualize and prioritize objects and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to perform detailed-oriented work for long periods of time.

  • Ability to work closely with library resource vendors.

  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment and adapt to changing technologies.

  • Ability to coordinate work with other employees providing direct instruction or supervision as assigned.

  • Ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently to promote teamwork within the organization.

  • Ability to represent the department and University in a friendly courteous and professional manner.

  • Ability to use office equipment and personal computer including university software and email.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT
