Summary/Objective: Reporting to the Lab Manager and Lab Director perform the duties of the Histotechnician per the Laboratorys Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Histotechnician will adhere to and support our culture of compliance and safety by following all SOPs with attention to detail accuracy and professionalism at all times.
Minimum Essential Functions:
Daily essential functions of the Histotechnician are listed below. Details on how each function is to be performed is outlined in the SOP manual. The SOP manual is to be reviewed by all Histotechnicains upon hire when any updates occur and annually.
- Assist the lab manager with inventory and ordering laboratory supplies
- Monitor laboratory supply usage to ensure inventory levels are sufficient
- Delegation of technical work to the staff based on productivity and volume and staffing level
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunction and contact vendor for repairs if needed
- Provide 75% of the bench work as needed based on volume and staffing level
- Assist the lab manager with administrative duties such as filing reports continuing education materials and documentation of quality assurance forms.
- Embed skin specimens such as shaves punches nails and excisions
- Perform microtomy on histology blocks
- Stain and coverslip hematoxylin and eosin slides
- Perform special stain techniques such as but not limited to PAS AFB and Gram stain
- Perform immunohistochemistry stains on the Bond Max and the Ventana Ultra
- Cut control slides for IHC and special stains
- Assist with slide distribution if needed.
- File paraffin blocks and H/E slides in accordance with procedures
- Operate and maintain tissue processors
- Trouble-shoot lab equipment and ensure proper routine maintenance
- Ensure quality control procedures are followed and appropriate documentations are maintained
- Monitor inventory and assure proper reagent documentation techniques
- Biohazard and hazardous waste disposal in accordance with policy and regulations
- Maintain a safe clean work environment
- Observe blood-borne pathogens policy and proper personal protective equipment
- Adhere to all company and laboratory specific SOPs and complete quality control (QC) logs as required on a daily weekly monthly or annual basis (per individual SOPs)
- Other duties as deemed necessary by Lab Management team to support the overall operations of the lab
Minimum Education Required:
- High School Diploma/GED minimum required; Associate Degree preferred
- Prior work experience of on-the-job with histology techniques; experience in large-scale organization or high-volume production environment preferred to gain seasoned familiarity with processing specimens in production environment.
- Proficiency in major staining and special staining techniques with strong analytical skills to process slides under tight deadlines; ability to identify specimens requiring supervisory follow-up.
- Prior team lead experience a plus
- HT/HTL(ASCP) Certification is preferred.
