Law Clerk
ROLE
We need an experienced Law Clerk at the United States Attorneys Office (USAO) Middle District of Georgia (MDGA). The United States Attorneys Office serves as the nations principal litigators under the direction of the Attorney General responsible for the prosecution of criminal cases prosecution and defense of civil cases and collection of debts owed the Federal this role you will provide direct legal support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) within the Criminal and Civil Divisions working on various criminal and civil cases to enhance efforts to combat crime and enforce immigration laws including overseeing habeas corpus matters conducting legal research and analysis drafting legal documents and correspondence and keeping abreast of applicable federal state and local laws and procedures. RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee practice regarding 28 USC 2255 (habeas corpus) and immigration habeas matters including receiving and docketing calendaring due dates contacting appropriate AUSA/Support Staff regarding locating files necessary to drafting responses preparing draft responses for review by appropriate AUSAs and attending to timely filing of responses.
  • Analyze statutes legislative intent judicial precedents agency rules and regulations and law review articles as they relate to assigned cases including those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature.
  • Brief AUSAs on pertinent facts issues and case law in support of assigned matters.
  • Draft correspondence and legal documents for attorney signature; draft proposed orders for signature of judges and magistrates.
  • Work with assigned AUSAs to determine applicable administrative statutory and regulatory law and identify possible defenses violations or causes of action.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of all applicable federal state and local laws; keep abreast of new criminal and civil rules and procedures; alert AUSAs to all potential issues identified during case file review and data analysis.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and within scope.

BACKGROUND/REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum 6 months post-J.D. professional legal or other relevant experience.
  • Ability to utilize law library resources and working knowledge of research tools such as Westlaw Lexis/Nexis CourtLink etc.
  • Ability to perform all basic computer functions. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook Word Excel PowerPoint etc.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff including AUSAs support staff client agencies debtors debtor attorneys and their staff court personnel business executives witnesses and the public. Communication requires tact and diplomacy.
  • Experience and expertise performing the responsibilities above

EDUCATION
  • Law Degree (J.D.) and licensed by a state bar required

HOURS
  • 40 hours per week
  • 8 hours per day

COMPENSATION
  • Salary Range: $65000 -$85000commensurate on experience

Other Considerations:This position is W-2 only; no Corp-to-Corp or 1099 will not be offered. This position requires access to Department of Justice facilities and systems. As a condition of employment selected candidates must complete and receive favorable adjudication from a federal government background investigation as required by the U.S. Department of Justice. Individuals primary workstation is located in an office area. The noise level in this environment is low to moderate. Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 80% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC copier fax telephone cell phone etc. Occasionally required to reach overhead bend and lift objects of up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of the time.
