Job Description
The School of Architecture and Design is seeking applicants for a part-time Lab Technician (up to 25 hours per week).
The Lab Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the School of Architecture and Designs labs by providing faculty and students with fabrication training and continued support as well as maintaining equipment and lab spaces. The role also contributes to special projects studio setup and events that advance the Schools mission. The Lab Technician is part of a collaborative team of technical staff and reports directly to the Director of Labs.
Essential Functions:
1. (40%)
Oversee use of the School of Architecture and Designs labs to maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment. Provide continued support for students and faculty working on design prototyping and applied research. Intervene when unsafe practices are observed and report incidents as required.
2. (20%)
Provide students staff and faculty with instruction on equipment and fabrication methods.
3. (30%)
Maintain lab equipment including calibration preventative maintenance and repairs. Ensure organization cleanliness and general upkeep of lab spaces.
4. (10%)
Assist with School of Architecture and Design special projects including lab development initiatives studio setup and preparation for events such as open houses exhibitions and end-of-semester reviews.
Minimum Qualifications:
General
Excellent written verbal and visual communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team.
Demonstrated commitment to fostering a safe inclusive and collaborative learning environment.
Technical
Practical experience with:
physical model-making and rapid prototyping using both digital and traditional fabrication tools and methods.
foundational woodworking.
additive manufacturing technologies e.g. FDM SLA and LDM and associated equipment operation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical
Practical experience with:
CAD/CAM workflows and CNC equipment operation.
maintenance calibration and troubleshooting of CNC equipment.
maintenance calibration and troubleshooting of additive manufacturing equipment.
studio photography.
operating and programming industrial robots.
XR (extended reality) technologies as they relate to design development and visualization.
physical computing.
Position Details:
The job grade for this position is Grade 4 (N).
The expected hourly rate for this position is between $27.18- $32.82 which reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role.
