Job Summary

Position Summary

The Junior Underwriter supports both the underwriting and brokerage functions within a specialty marine underwriting and distribution team. This role assists Underwriters and Brokers in the evaluation marketing processing and servicing of commercial marine insurance accounts partnering with agents and carriers on submissions while also helping shepherd business through underwriting review quoting binding and policy issuance. The Junior Underwriter maintains underwriting files prepares broker- and carrier-facing documentation and ensures data accuracy throughout the full placement lifecycle. This role works collaboratively with Underwriters brokers agents carriers and internal departments to provide efficient service and support profitable business growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Underwriting Support

  • Assist Underwriters with new and renewal account processing risk analysis and coverage recommendations.

  • Review submission materials for completeness and follow up with brokers/agents for outstanding underwriting information (loss runs exposure schedules applications).

  • Prepare quotations indications binders certificates endorsements and other underwriting documents.

  • Enter and maintain account information within underwriting and policy management systems.

  • Coordinate policy issuance and ensure accuracy of coverage documentation.

  • Review loss runs exposure schedules and other underwriting information for completeness and accuracy.

  • Monitor outstanding items and assist in managing underwriting workflows and renewal timelines.

  • Assist with reporting bordereaux management and portfolio tracking as needed.

Brokerage & Distribution Support

  • Support the marketing of new and renewal submissions to carriers helping identify appropriate markets and coverage solutions for agents and brokers.

  • Serve as a day-to-day point of contact for broker and agent inquiries regarding market appetite submission status quotes and coverage terms.

  • Assist in negotiating terms conditions and pricing with carriers on behalf of the brokerage/underwriting team.

  • Help prepare client- and broker-facing materials including coverage comparisons market submissions and premium summaries.

  • Support relationship management with agents brokers and carrier partners to strengthen distribution channels and drive retention.

  • Coordinate with internal claims risk engineering and legal teams to support account servicing and broker requests.

General & Administrative

  • Respond to broker and agent requests regarding policy status documentation and underwriting requirements.

  • Maintain accurate electronic files and documentation in accordance with company procedures and compliance requirements.

  • Participate in account servicing activities and support relationship management efforts across both underwriting and brokerage functions.

  • Support underwriting and distribution initiatives special projects and process improvement efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree preferred or equivalent insurance industry experience.

  • 2-5 years of insurance underwriting brokerage or related experience preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment involving both underwriting and brokerage workflows.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with comfort communicating directly with agents brokers and carrier partners.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel Outlook and Word.

  • Ability to analyze information and exercise sound judgment.

  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering high-quality customer service to both internal and external partners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in commercial property & casualty specialty or marine insurance in either an underwriting or brokerage capacity.

  • Progress toward industry designations such as CPCU AU ARM or AMIM.

  • Familiarity with underwriting policy administration and document management systems as well as carrier/market submission processes.

  • Prior exposure to agent/broker relationship management or marketing of accounts to carriers.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to learn underwriting concepts insurance products and brokerage/distribution practices.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment that spans underwriting and brokerage functions.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Comfort operating as a liaison between internal underwriting teams and external agents brokers and carriers.

Career Path

This position is designed to provide foundational underwriting and brokerage experience necessary for advancement into an Underwriter/Broker role through continued technical development training and demonstrated performance.

The target salary range for this position is $88000.00 - $110000.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors such as training transferable skills work experience licensure and certification business needs and market demands.
