Job Summary
The Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean sanitary safe and well-maintained child development center that supports the health safety and well-being of children families staff and visitors. This position performs daily cleaning and sanitizing duties while ensuring compliance with all applicable Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) Child Care Regulation Minimum Standards OSHA safety practices and center policies. The Janitor helps provide an environment that promotes infection prevention child safety and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the essential functions of this position. Additional duties may be assigned as operational needs require.
Cleaning Sanitation and Facility Appearance
- Maintain a clean sanitary and welcoming environment by cleaning disinfecting and sanitizing classrooms restrooms offices kitchens common areas playgrounds and other facility spaces in accordance with established cleaning schedules and center procedures.
- Clean floors windows furniture equipment high-touch surfaces and other facility areas while promptly responding to spills sanitation concerns and cleaning emergencies.
- Assist with cleaning toys classroom equipment and other shared materials as assigned to support a healthy learning environment.
Health Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Follow all health sanitation infection control and safety procedures in accordance with Texas HHSC Child Care Regulation Minimum Standards applicable regulations and Goodwill policies.
- Safely use store label and dispose of cleaning chemicals hazardous materials and waste while maintaining required Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and protecting children from exposure.
- Identify report and help address unsafe conditions facility hazards equipment damage pest concerns and other maintenance issues to promote a safe environment for children families staff and visitors.
- Support emergency preparedness by helping maintain clear evacuation routes and assisting with emergency drills and facility readiness.
Inventory and Operational Support
- Monitor and maintain cleaning and maintenance supply inventories organize storage areas and notify administration when supplies or equipment require replenishment or repair.
- Support daily center operations by assisting with classroom setup moving furniture or equipment preparing for licensing inspections and responding to maintenance requests in a timely manner.
Team Collaboration and Professionalism
- Collaborate effectively with center staff to support daily operations and maintain a safe healthy and welcoming environment for children and families.
- Demonstrate professionalism dependability flexibility and a commitment to high-quality facility maintenance while supporting the mission values and quality standards of the Child Development Center.
- Maintain required training and certifications in accordance with Texas licensing requirements workplace safety standards and Goodwill policies.
Supervisory Duties
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications

- Pass all required HHSC background checks and licensing requirements.
- A criminal background check is required in accordance with applicable law and Goodwill policy.
- Current pediatric CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
- Must be willing to accept instructions and carry them out with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work and cooperate with others.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or GED preferred. At least one (1) year of custodial or janitorial experience required. Experience working in a licensed childcare center school healthcare or similar environment preferred. Current pediatric CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe. Ability to complete all required preservice and annual training.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and cleaning tools; knowledge of infection-control procedures proper cleaning/sanitizing/disinfecting procedures and safe chemical handling and storage; ability to read and follow product labels and safety instructions.
- Ability to identify safety hazards and report concerns promptly; flexible dependable and adaptable in a fast-paced environment; ability to work independently and efficiently.
- Strong organizational time management communication and teamwork skills; ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism; positive and professional demeanor.

- Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds; frequently bend kneel squat climb ladders and reach overhead; stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently operate cleaning equipment including vacuums mops floor-cleaning equipment and hand tools; respond quickly to cleaning and sanitation emergencies.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions; requires frequent interactions with children staff vendors health inspectors and licensing representatives.
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
- Work is performed in a childcare and early learning environment including classrooms restrooms offices kitchens common areas and outdoor spaces. Noise levels range from quiet to loud. Regular exposure to cleaning chemicals sanitation products and varying indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
