Position Overview:

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking to hire a Support Service Worker for the Dietary Department at an Illinois Veterans Home. This position assists with food service operations meal preparation and distribution cleaning sanitation and other duties necessary to support the dietary needs of residents. The Support Service Worker plays an important role in maintaining a safe sanitary and efficient dining environment while contributing to the quality of care provided to Illinois Veterans. Essential Functions:
  • Performs routine tasks in the kitchen dining room or other dietary areas.
  • Performs routine food distribution and cleanup duties.
  • Takes inventory and document daily records of nourishments leftovers refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
  • Clean and maintains sanitary standards of kitchen washing scrubbing mopping dusting polishing or waxing floors walls windows woodwork furniture appliances fixtures and equipment.
  • Assists in preparing Ala Cart menu items room trays (early or late) sack lunches for outings or medical appointments as needed.
  • Rotation for familiarity and knowledge to be proficient in all areas of the Dietary Department.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school SUPPLEMENTED by six (6) months experience in dietary related support service.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Requires ability to pass a background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen and pre-employment physical.
  • Requires ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
  • Requires ability acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment including personal computers.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars conferences and trainings to stay current on methods tools ideologies or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • This position requires the completion of an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) approved food handling training program and the attainment of an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited Food Handlers Certification within 30 days of employment. As a continuous condition of employment employees are required to monitor expiration timelines maintain active certification via timely renewals and proactively submit updated documentation to the agency prior to expiration of their current certificate.
  • Overtime is a condition or employment and you may be required to work overtime including scheduled unscheduled or last-minute overtime.
