Job Summary
Ariadne Labs is a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Womens Hospital and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Our goal is to drive scalable solutions for better care at critical moments in peoples lives everywhere. Better care means better health outcomes lower costs and more actual caring. Ariadne Labs currently has research programs in the areas of childbirth surgery and palliative care.BetterBirth Program Overview
The BetterBirth Program is focused on ensuring better health and wellbeing for women newborns and infants by improving quality and standards of care minimizing complications and ending preventable deaths. By generating evidence and working with impacted communities to co-design effective and actionable tools information and resources we aim to equip providers with the support they need to provide safe compassionate care. We do this through the effective implementation of scalable evidence-based solutions that work in the real world both at the frontline of care and in communities.
The BetterBirth Program began with the goal of evaluating the World Health Organizations (WHO) Safe Childbirth Checklist and identifying opportunities and strategies to support its successful implementation. Since that time our work has grown to address the complexities across the ecosystem of maternal newborn and infant health.
One area of focus of the BetterBirth Programs Portfolio of work is improving the quality of care around the time of childbirth. This summer practicum is designed to support a newer area of our portfolio Extreme Heat and Childbirth which is focused on developing an understanding of how extreme heat negatively affects maternal and perinatal health outcomes. By building an improved understanding of a potentially modifiable determinant of maternal and perinatal outcomes we can look to potential solutions for reducing risk and preventing potential negative outcomes.
This is a practicum opportunity which will enable a student to collaborate on an active global health research project. The student will collaborate with the BetterBirth Team and potentially with partners in India to build on and add to a large and complex data set (the data set merged from the landmark BetterBirth Trial that contains outcomes from 160000 mother-baby dyads) preparing it for merge with heat exposure data.
Project needs for the practicum may include the following set of activities: Data set cleaning and preparation Assignment of GSP coordinates Engagement with study/project partners; Literature reviews.(Exact activities may depend on start date project progress and amount of available time to commit to the practicum).
This research is conducted independently under the supervision of the principal investigator on projects focused on transplantation immunology. Research projects will prepare the incumbent to work fully independently on department level and original research in the future. The research conducted and work performed is at least partially in fulfillment of their degree program requirements.
Essential Functions
Designs experiments and modifies techniques as necessary to meet research and/or experimental needs.
Collects and records study data as well as maintains laboratory notebooks.
Designs as well as executes research projects and participates in large animal experiments and laboratory research.
Synthesizes and interprets information obtained from the experiments performs data analysis using advanced statistical techniques.
In collaboration with the PIs drafts manuscripts and serves as a co-author on publications in journals and presentations at professional conferences and scientific meetings.
Interprets results develops new investigative techniques and in collaboration with the PI determines the most appropriate direction of research.
Participates and presents in Lab meetings and research seminars.
Provides functional guidance to technical and animal care personnel involved in projects.
Works safely within the laboratory environment and in performing work duties.
Wears personal protective equipment as required.

- Must be capable of performing and interpreting assay data related to the specific research lab.

- Proficiency in Word PowerPoint Excel and Internet searches.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Qualifications
- Experience working with data sets
- Interest in quality of care and/or maternal and neonatal health
- Familiarity with quantitative research methodologies (preferred)
- Experience with literature reviews and basic quantitative analyses (preferred)
- Familiarity with health systems outside the US (preferred)
- Organized and detail oriented
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in partnership with colleagues of varying backgrounds and expertise
