Reports To: Assistant Superintendent for Learning

SUMMARY:
The Interim K8 Social Studies Coach provides leadership in the development implementation evaluation and continuous improvement of the districts social studies practices for grades K8. This role supports teachers through professional learning coaching and collaborative planning to ensure high-quality engaging social studies instruction for all students.

The Interim K8 Social Studies Coach works closely with curriculum leaders principals instructional coaches and teacher leaders across the district to promote a cohesive and vertically aligned social studies program. The coach serves as a key resource in advancing curriculum innovation instructional excellence equitable learning opportunities and student achievement in social studies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the K8 social studies program based on student achievement data and identified instructional needs.
  • Lead curriculum review cycles and facilitate the development revision and continuous improvement of science curriculum and instructional resources.
  • Collaborate with principals and teachers to implement recommendations resulting from curriculum reviews program evaluations and instructional innovations.
  • Partner with teachers principals special education staff English Learner educators and high school science leaders to ensure a coherent and vertically aligned K12 social studies program.
  • Coordinate the research development implementation ongoing evaluation and refinement of a K8 social studies curriculum aligned with the Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Frameworks such as Facing History and other high-quality instructional materials (HQIM).
  • Design facilitate and support professional learning opportunities related to social studies curriculum instruction assessment and emerging best practices.
  • Provide professional development and implementation support related to school district and state social studies assessments.
  • Collaborate with educators to develop and implement a balanced assessment system including common formative assessments and provide professional learning on effective assessment design and use.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Assistant Superintendent for Learning on matters related to social studies curriculum instruction and assessment.
  • Coordinate the evaluation selection purchasing and distribution of instructional materials supplies and resources to support social studies programming.
  • Establish measurable goals for improving student learning outcomes and monitor progress through assessment data and classroom observations.
  • Participate as a member of the district leadership team and attend elementary and middle school team meetings as needed.
  • Collaborate with instructional coaches and teacher leaders to strengthen instructional practices and support continuous improvement across schools.
  • Serve as a co-evaluator with principals (when applicable).
  • Host curriculum nights.
  • Manage school spreadsheets and district data sheets when applicable.
  • Work with the Administrative Assistant for Learning and the Director of Student Information to ensure that the district data sheets for principals data meetings are available.
  • Work with the building principal or designee in analyzing student data and attend district data meetings (when applicable).
  • Work with the Literacy Curriculum Coordinator K-8 to ensure that social studies units are embedded in the CKLA Amplify curriculum.
  • Analyze student data to meet set benchmarks and progress monitoring goals as determined by the district and the schools.
  • Work on development and implementation of a district wide data protocol with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at BHS to be used district wide when looking at student data and work.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Learning.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Strong knowledge of the Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Minimum of five years of successful classroom teaching experience.
  • Valid Massachusetts Elementary Teacher Professional License Social Studies License preferred.
  • Valid Massachusetts Administrator License required.
  • Experience developing standards-based curriculum and implementing standards-based instructional and assessment practices.
  • Experience designing facilitating and sustaining high-quality professional learning for educators.
  • Experience using assessment and data analysis to inform instruction improve programming and support student achievement.
  • Experience serving as an instructional coach curriculum leader or professional development provider.
  • Experience supporting teachers through curriculum implementation instructional coaching or curriculum revision.
  • Experience integrating technology and emerging instructional tools to enhance teaching learning and curriculum development.
  • Experience in understanding the change process and how to implement sustainable change.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with educators across a variety of roles including classroom teachers interventionists special educators instructional coaches and district administrators.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusive culturally responsive learning environments for all students.
  • Positive proactive and solutions-oriented approach to working with diverse stakeholders.

COMPENSATION:

In accordance with Burlington Educators Association contract Unit D
