The Role in Brief
Gateway faculty facilitate student learning and actively contribute to efforts that improve student success. As a learning facilitator you will assess student learning outcomes evaluate your own teaching effectiveness and adapt instruction to help students build the knowledge skills and confidence needed for success in emergency medical services.
The Program Director/Instructor EMS opportunity combines faculty responsibilities with program leadership and support for the continued quality effectiveness and development of Gateways EMS education.
These positions are part of the School of Protective & Human Services and report to the Dean.

What You Will Actually Do
Teaching and Learning
- Deliver approved curriculum and facilitate learning in classroom laboratory clinical and applied learning settings as assigned.
- Effectively manage the classroom and/or laboratory learning environment.
- Monitor and assess student learning outcomes.
- Provide timely and frequent feedback to students regarding academic and skill performance.
Curriculum and Program Effectiveness
- Monitor curriculum effectiveness and recommend updates or improvements when appropriate.
- Participate in program evaluation and continuous improvement activities.
- Assess teaching effectiveness and adjust instructional practices based on student needs and outcomes.
Student Recruitment Retention and Completion
- Promote and participate in student recruitment retention and completion initiatives.
- Foster a culture of professionalism accountability and inclusive learning.
- Support students from varied backgrounds experiences and learning needs.
Professional and Institutional Engagement
- Participate in advisory and/or institutional committees.
- Maintain required certifications and professional credentials.
- Continue professional development and remain current in the EMS field and instructional practices.
- Develop and maintain relationships with business industry employers EMS providers and community partners.
What You Need to Succeed
Minimum Qualifications
Option 1: Bachelors degree in any field and at least two years or 4000 hours of occupational experience as a Paramedic.
OR
Option 2: Associate degree in any field and at least four years or 8000 hours of occupational experience as a Paramedic.
OR
Option 3: No degree required and at least seven years or 14000 hours of occupational experience as a Paramedic.
Required for All Qualification Pathways
- Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification.
- Current Wisconsin Paramedic license or the ability to obtain Wisconsin licensure as a condition of employment.
- Current EMS Instructor II certification or the ability to obtain EMS Instructor II certification as a condition of employment.
Included in the occupational experience above at least 2000 hours of demonstrated relevant occupational experience must be within the last five years OR the candidate must have at least two years of full-time postsecondary teaching experience equivalent to eight semesters of part-time teaching in the occupational field within the last five years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current BLS Instructor certification through the American Heart Association.
- Current ACLS Instructor certification through the American Heart Association.
- Current PALS Instructor certification through the American Heart Association.

- Working experience with computer software systems.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
- Ability to teach a wide range of EMS-related subjects.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- Flexibility to accommodate day evening and weekend student needs.
Conditions of Employment
Work Authorization: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available.
Background Check: Employment is contingent upon an acceptable background check.
Schedule: Flexibility is needed to accommodate day evening and weekend student and business needs.
