Other Conditions:Contingent on course offerings and student demand to begin approximately August 2026 pending position clearance availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. The position may be converted from 11 to 9 months or 9 to 11 months based on operational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Under general supervision teach assigned Hawaiian language courses including design delivery and assessment in terms of student-learning outcomes; develop and/or update course content and materials and teaching and assessment strategies and methods to

  • improve student attainment of learning outcomes;

  • address the learning needs of the colleges diverse students;

  • integrate thinking and writing skills into course content as appropriate; and

  • use multimedia resources.

• Teach courses in the Hawaiian Language through multiple modes of teaching (i.e. in-person online hybrid)

• Provide instruction and guidance to meet student learning outcomes prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress;

• Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes;

• Submit self-assessment reports based on student and peer evaluations;

• Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.

• Integrate teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.

• Maintain one office hour per week for each class taught (20 minutes per credit per week);

• Classes may be offered in-person online evenings and/or weekends.

• Classes may be offered off-site as when required

• Non-teaching duties include:

  • Working collegially to provide service to the department and college

  • Engaging in public service related to ones professional status and/or expertise

  • Engaging in professional development and

  • Engaging in professional or scholarly activities related to ones discipline or teaching.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian the ability to communicate in English and one of the following:

• Masters degree in Hawaiian (language or literature);OR

• Masters degree in Hawaiian as a Second Language;OR

• Masters degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian;OR

• Masters degree in Linguistics ESL Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology Hawaiian literature Hawaiian culture or any combination thereof;OR

• Bachelors degree in Hawaiian (language or literature)AND3 years related work experience;OR

• Bachelors degree in Hawaiian as a Second LanguageAND3 years related work experience;OR

• Bachelors degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak HawaiianAND3 years related work experience;OR

• Bachelors degree in Linguistics ESL Education or other language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology Hawaiian literature Hawaiian culture or any combination thereofAND3 years related work experience.

Note:Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Evidence of experience integrating speaking writing technology and thinking skills in the teaching of the Hawaiian language at the community college level with evidence substantiated by student and peer assessments.

• Experience teaching the Hawaiian language through multiple modes of teaching (i.e. in-person online hybrid).

• Successful teaching at the post-secondary level as substantiated by student and peer assessments.

• Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers department chairs and administrators.

• Successful use of technology to support all modes of instruction.

• Commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its open-door and multicultural populations.

• Ability to initiate execute and complete projects including setting specific objectives and measuring results.

• Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop Hawaiian literature and/or culture courses.

• Comprehension or understanding of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.

• Evidence of commitment to Kapiolani Community Colleges vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous-serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social economic and sustainable advancement of Hawaii and the world.
