Job Summary

NOTE: This is a flexible term position dependent on project funding. Current funding is expected for at least 4 years.

We are seeking a staff scientist with expertise in next generation sequencing (NGS) and animal models of infection and disease to conduct independent research aimed at understanding immunological mechanisms relevant to preventative countermeasure strategies for future pandemics and emerging biothreats. The successful applicants will contribute advanced technical expertise to the development of a  host-response research pipeline for characterizing immune responses induced by infection vaccination or environmental exposures and for  evaluating biologic countermeasures. The position is in the Translational Immunology group within the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division. 

In this role you will:

  • Conduct independent research in biological exposure (pathogen/environmental) and its impact on immunology and disease.
  • Conceive develop and implement experimental approaches related to pathogen exposures and the immune effects based on immunological and biochemical characterization of cells transcripts proteins and metabolites.
  • Conduct studies to support the discovery validation and mechanistic understanding of signaling pathways that can be further translated into new treatments for a variety of diseases or infections.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team of scientists project leaders and program leaders and external partners to achieve research objectives
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Prepare technical reports and present research findings to internal and external audiences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • PhD in Immunology molecular biology infectious disease or a relevant field.
  • Significant experience designing implementing and validating NGS workflows for applications in understanding immune responses in vivo.
  • Working knowledge of multi-color flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry assays.
  • Significant experience troubleshooting complex molecular workflows and implementing quality control strategies.
  • Experience working with rodent animal models including handling and drug or vaccine administration
  • Ability to work with a high level of independence as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Significant experience designing and executing independent research studies
  • Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment present technical information and provide technical guidance.

 

Qualifications we desire:

  • Experience designing implementing and analyzing multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting experiments.
  • Experience with 3D ex vivo cultures and/or organoids.
  • Working knowledge of applications for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS).

Pay Range 

$175530 - $222564 annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employees position within the salary range will be based on several factors including but not limited to specific competencies relevant education qualifications certifications experience skills seniority geographic location performance and business or organizational needs.

This is a Flexible Term appointment which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.  If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).
