Overview:

Reporting to the Director of HR assist in administrative HR tasks as assigned. This internship program is designed for students or recent graduates seeking hands-on professional experience in Human Resources.

Job Title: Human Resources Intern (Paid)

Status: Part time
Pay Rate: $21.00/hour

Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week during standard business hours

This extended internship is designed to provide meaningful exposure to internal HR operations over the course of an academic year.

Location: San Diego California

Remote/Onsite: Hybrid

This position can be a hybrid telecommute position after the initial training period and after the candidate has successfully shown they understand and can manage all position responsibilities. After initial training period in office is expected 1-2 days per week.

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Human Resources Intern to join our HR team in a dynamic healthcare environment. This paid internship offers hands-on experience across multiple HR functions including payroll benefits administration employee relations and HR operations. The intern will work closely with a collaborative HR team of four and receive direct mentorship from experienced HR professionals. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in Human Resources.

Essential Job Duties

The HR Intern will support day-to-day HR operations and assist team members with the following:


Internal HR Audits

  • Conduct internal HR audits of I-9 forms personnel files EEO documentation and other employee records to ensure accuracy completeness and compliance with company policies and federal/state regulations.

HR Administration & Operations

  • Maintain and update employee records in HRIS systems
  • Assist with onboarding and offboarding processes (new hire paperwork orientations exit documentation)
  • Participate in onboarding presentations with HR Team
  • Help prepare employee files to ensure compliance with California labor laws and internal policies
  • Support document management and audit readiness
  • Support employee recognition initiatives

Recruitment & Talent Support

  • Assist HR coordinator with recruiting coordination and interview scheduling
  • Support recruitment tracking
  • Assist with job posting management and applicant tracking system updates

Employee Engagement & HR Projects

  • Assist in planning employee engagement activities and internal company events
  • Support HR initiatives such as training coordination and compliance tracking
  • Contribute to special HR projects (policy updates process improvements surveys etc.)
  • Opportunity to support additional HR functions based on business needs and individual strengths
  • Support culture and wellness initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Completed high school education
  • Recent entry level HR experience coursework or currently pursuing a higher degree in Human Resources Business Administration or related field
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel Word Outlook)
  • Desire to work in a team-oriented workplace and collaborate with all HR team members and other internal staff

    • Interest in healthcare HR or medical group operations
    • Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced environment
    • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
    • Understanding of general business practices
    • HRIS experience is a plus
    • HR Certification

      Physical Demands

      This position primarily involves office-based work including prolonged sitting computer use occasional standing walking between office locations and lifting up to 15 pounds of office materials. Must be able to safely ascend and descend stairs as a core part of the job with or without reasonable accommodation when no elevator or lift is present.

      Work Environment

      Position is primarily office-based with flexibility for remote work as approved after training is complete. Employees will be required to routinely use standard office equipment including a laptop computer mouse monitors scanner and/or photocopier.

      Employees working remotely must maintain a reliable internet connection and a quiet professional workspace that supports productivity during scheduled working hours. Remote work eligibility is contingent upon maintaining an appropriate and effective remote work environment including necessary workspace furnishings and internet access.

      Beginning in 1973 Balboa has grown from two physicians to a comprehensive nephrology team of 52 board certified physicians and 8 advanced practitioners. On January 1 2018 Balboa Nephrology Medical Group (BNMG) launched Balboa United a full-service medical practice management services organization. From one small office BNMG now has 24 clinical offices throughout San Diego Imperial Orange and Riverside addition to office and hospital-based patient care Balboa physicians manage the dialysis treatments of approximately 4500 patients at 88 dialysis centers and conduct Nephrology based clinical research at 6 centers throughout Imperial and San Diego counties (California Institute of Renal Research).
