Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Associate Director for Housekeeping Services (or designee) the Housekeeper provides comprehensive custodial services for San Francisco State University Housing facilities and performs lead work direction on an as-needed basis primarily during peak operational periods such as summer and winter turn conference season and large-scale occupancy transitions.
The incumbent performs the full range of custodial duties in residential conference and common areas and may provide temporary lead support to assigned staff and temporary employees including coordinating work training and ensuring quality standards are met during high-demand periods.
This position plays a critical role in maintaining a clean safe and welcoming environment for residents staff and guests while supporting operational readiness during critical housing transitions.
Position Information
Custodial Cleaning & Maintenance
Perform the full range of custodial duties across housing and conference facilities to maintain a clean safe and sanitary environment:
- Clean and maintain residence halls apartments offices lounges kitchens restrooms and conference/event spaces
- Perform unit turnover cleaning including deep cleaning and sanitization of residential units to meet occupancy standards
- Sweep mop vacuum shampoo carpets and perform floor care (strip seal wax polish)
- Clean and disinfect restrooms; replenish soap paper products and sanitary supplies
- Dust and clean surfaces fixtures vents walls windows mirrors partitions and furniture
- Remove trash recycling and compost; transport to designated collection areas
- Clean graffiti and maintain exterior walkways stairwells and entryways
- Perform pre- and post-event cleaning and ensure proper room resets
Lead Work Direction (Seasonal)
- Provide lead work direction during high-volume operational periods such as housing turnover
- Assign and coordinate daily work for temporary and/or student staff
- Train staff on custodial procedures safety practices and proper equipment use
- Provide task-specific guidance to ensure timely completion of unit turns and project work
- Monitor and inspect work for quality completeness and adherence to standards
- Provide real-time feedback and direction to support productivity and efficiency
- Assist with onboarding and training of seasonal staff
- Communicate priorities timelines and expectations during fast-paced operational periods
Custodial Operations & Event Support
- Support large-scale operational efforts such as move-in/move-out summer conferences and break transitions
- Coordinate workflow and task completion during high-volume periods
- Set up and break down furniture and equipment for events and programs
- Inspect facilities for cleanliness readiness and safety
- Respond to custodial emergencies (spills floods biohazards urgent clean-up needs)
- Lock/unlock and secure facilities to ensure safety and access control
- Perform minor maintenance (e.g. tightening fixtures replacing bulbs)
- Report facility issues maintenance needs and safety hazards
Equipment Supplies & Inventory Management
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment (buffers extractors vacuums carts auto scrubbers)
- Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisor of supply needs
- Ensure proper handling use and storage of cleaning chemicals in accordance with SDS guidelines
- Maintain equipment in safe working condition and report repair needs
- Support sustainable and green cleaning practices
Customer Service & Team Collaboration
- Provide responsive courteous and professional service to residents guests and staff
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding work status and needs
- Support team-based assignments and collaborate with others as needed
- Participate in staff meetings and training

Minimum Qualifications
Abilities
Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required; perform work involving regular physical activity; and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships. Some positions may require ability to move up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Equivalent to two years of custodial experience including experience providing on-the-job training or lead direction
- Experience providing lead or supervisory direction to staff
- Experience supporting large-scale cleaning operations or facility turnovers
- Experience working with temporary seasonal or student staff
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate work in time-sensitive environments
- Experience performing custodial or housekeeping duties in residential hospitality or institutional settings
- Experience in a university or student housing environment
- Knowledge of green cleaning practices and sustainable custodial methods
- Familiarity with work order systems and custodial tracking tools
- Strong customer service skills and ability to work in a diverse student-centered environment
Required License/Certification
- Some positions may require possession of a valid California drivers license

Environmental/Physical/Special
- Work is performed in residential buildings including confined and public spaces
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals dust and biohazards
- Requires frequent walking standing bending kneeling lifting and reaching
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
- May work evenings weekends and holidays based on operational needs including peak housing periods such as move-in and move-out
- May be required to respond to emergency situations and be available for call back outside of regular working hours
- Must adhere to campus safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE)
