North Haven High SchoolEnglish Long-Term Substitute Position

North Haven High School is seeking a qualified enthusiastic English teacher to serve as a long-term substitute on our supportive veteran English team! The long-term substitute position runs from the start of the school year (August 27 2026) through October 2nd 2026.

The teaching assignment includes five freshman and sophomore English classes at a variety of levels (honors college bound and remedial).

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong classroom management a deep

understanding of high school ELA standards and a commitment to student growth and

engagement.

This educator will be responsible for maintaining a safe productive classroom environment delivering instruction aligned to curriculum standards assessing student progress and supporting the academic and social-emotional development of all students.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver daily English Language Arts instruction to high school students
  • Implement lesson plans aligned with curriculum and state standards
  • Maintain a structured and supportive classroom environment
  • Assess and monitor student progress using formative and summative assessments
  • Communicate effectively with students parents/guardians and staff
  • Collaborate with grade-level and department colleagues as needed
  • Manage classroom routines and student behavior in accordance with school policies
  • Provide meaningful feedback to students to support learning and growth

Qualifications

  • Valid teaching certification in high school English Language Arts or eligibility for certification
  • Prior teaching experience at the high school level valued
  • Strong knowledge of ELA curriculum and instructional strategies
  • Ability to create an engaging and supportive classroom culture
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to stand walk sit talk and hear
  • Occasionally required to reach kneel crouch or crawl
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
  • Visual ability to read and interact with students and materials at various distances

Work Environment/Schedule

  • Typical school environment with noise levels ranging from quiet to loud
  • Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions
  • In our 4 by 4 alternate-day block schedule NHHS faculty members teach 3 classes one day and on the other day teach two classes plus a duty assignment. Each day faculty have an 82 minute unassigned planning period plus a 30 minute lunch.

Certification Required: 015 or related certification covering English for grades 9 and 10

Start Date: August 27 2026

Salary: $140/day for first 40 days ($261.48/day if the position is extended to the 41st day).
