The Health Information Technician performs tasks to keep patient records confidential accurate and in line with regulatory standards. Must adhere to the organizational Policies Procedures Code of Ethics and all licensing and accreditation standards of the position. Must represent the organizations Mission in all actions and communications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare records for capture in the electronic chart ensuring proper image clarity and quality in accordance with HIPAA HITECH Meaningful Use and organizational guidelines.
  • Release information to persons and agencies according to regulations ensuring legal confidentiality standards are followed per HIPAA and State guidelines via fax print or electronic format.
  • Accurately process electronically transmitted information using a variety of tools.
  • Perform detailed peer audits to ensure accuracy and quality control.
  • Assist in maintaining the integrity of the patient electronic health record.
  • Maintain an acceptable measured productivity and audit percentage.
  • Maintain and utilize reference materials appropriately and effectively.
  • Train and support individuals in relation to Health Information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Understanding of medical and behavioral health terminology anatomy physiology surgery diagnostic testing radiology pathology pharmacology and various medical specialties
  • Operate scanning software/equipment and other electronic tools
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws regulations or standards
  • Microsoft Office computer skills
  • Working knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

EDUCATION / LICENSES / CERTIFICATES:

  • Required: High School / Equivalent
  • Preferred: Health Information Technician certification

EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience with data entry 10-key by touch medical terminology release of information in a health care setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job listed above.
