Job Summary

The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) invites pioneering early- or mid-career scholars from around the world in the area of national security to apply for the Harrington Faculty Fellows Program for the 2027-28 academic year. This highly selective program provides a full year of salary support to enable ambitious scholars to focus entirely on the advancement of their research and scholarship. Bolstered by unmatched resources and financial support Harrington Fellows are provided the freedom to solve significant problems the privilege of renowned mentorship and scholarly collaboration and the opportunity to push their work forward for the benefit of all society.

The thematic focus for this years competition is national security which can include themes such as diplomatic and military history international history the history of strategy and statecraft national security law foreign relations law law of armed conflict intelligence studies global affairs and global cybersecurity. Scholars from the disciplines of public policy law government history classics political science international relations and area studies are especially encouraged to apply but applications from any academic discipline will be seriously considered. The selected Harrington Fellows will be affiliated with UT Austins Clements Center for National Security and Strauss Center for International Security and Law.

Compensation

Fellows will be awarded generous salary stipends equivalent to 130% of their salaries at their home institutions. They will also receive reimbursement for moving expenses and a housing allowance that will enable them to spend a full year in residence at UT Austin beginning in August 2027. Each Fellow will also receive $75000 in discretionary funds to support their research scholarship collaboration and dissemination while at UT Austin. Harrington Fellows will benefit from opportunities to interact regularly with one another and with prominent campus research leaders providing additional opportunities for collaboration career development and academic growth.



Tenure-track or tenured faculty from any discipline whose research addresses fundamental questions in the area of national security are invited to apply. Faculty members who received their doctoral degree (or equivalent) within the previous 10 years at the time of application (i.e. August 2016 or later) are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be willing to relocate to Austin TX for the 2027-28 academic year and to remain in residence at UT Austin for 9 to 11 months beginning in August 2027. Fellows will be provided good office space and are expected to work there when they are not traveling for research.

Applicants are not required to be US citizens. We welcome applications from faculty at institutions from around the world who are eligible for J-1 visas.
