JOBDESCRIPTION:

This is maintenance and personal services work in supporting the year-round
preservation of State of Maine properties. Responsibilities include performing semiskilled manual labor tasks in construction repair maintenance and grounds upkeep and the use and/or operation of a variety of construction trades maintenance and landscaping tools and equipment. Work is performed under general supervision.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:

  • Maintains the grounds at the various State of Maine facilities including lawns gardensand parks using outdoor power equipment.
  • Performs lawn maintenance tasks such as seeding watering mowing trimming and raking.
  • Completes preparation and maintenance of flower beds including digging planting weeding and tending flowers and shrubs to beautify grounds.
  • Inspects and identifies plants flowers and trees for disease and insects infestation.
  • Applies insecticides fungicides and herbicides to maintain areas free of pest and plant disease.
  • Performs winter maintenance activities such as snow removal and ice treatment including determining treatment for various surfaces (i.e. concrete vs. asphalt) to ensure accessibility and safety of personnel.
  • Conducts trash pick-up sweeping of sand leaf defoliation branch removal and other waste removal to ensure area appearance meets established standards.
  • Collects garbage and empties wastebins around buildings parks and parking lots.
  • Constructs and repairs sidewalks curbs and signs for safe pedestrian and vehicle passage.
  • Builds forms and pours concrete for signposts and other foundations
  • Repairs parking lot damage using either cold patch or hot patch asphalt.
  • Ensures all catch basins and drainage ditches are clear of debris and are flowing properly.
  • Maintains and repairs benches paths and other landscaping features to ensure user safety.
  • Repairs and maintains tools and equipment to ensure equipment availability and safety.
  • Assists with special assignments such as moving furniture event staging and take down.

KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of landscaping and groundskeeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of general carpentry and masonry skills.
  • Knowledge of tools equipment and practices of general grounds maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and precautions needed to perform equipment repair work and ground maintenance activities safely.
  • Ability to use and operate standard equipment machinery and tools applicable to ground maintenance.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on tools and equipment.
  • Ability to service clean lubricate and adjust small engines and other machinery and equipment used for grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate cement mixers and air compressors.
  • Ability to mow trim and prune using standard grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Ability to perform snow removal operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to supervise a crew of semi-skilled laborers performing construction repair maintenance and ground preservation tasks.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to safely lift and move heavy objects.
  • Ability to safely work in strained positions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education training or experience in groundskeeping landscaping carpentry masonry or another related field demonstrating competency in operating and servicing outdoor power equipment; overseeing grounds and landscape maintenance; snow and ice removal and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A valid Maine Class C license.
