The incumbent is required to work inthe field and primarily in Allegany & Garrett counties. Incumbent may be asked to assist in othercounties as required by case load and availability of personnel and will berequired to report to the Frostburg location.

TheGeologist I is an entry level position in the field of environmental regulatorycomplianceunderthe Land and Materials Administration Mining Program Bureau of Mines. Themainpurposeof this position is to serve as the Bureau of Mines permit application revieweronimplementationof those portions of the States Surface Coal Mine Regulatory Program relatingtopreventionof environmental impacts through the evaluation of the geologic materials andhydro-geologicconditions within a proposed mining permit and adjacent areas. The incumbent inthis position will be responsible for evaluating the potential for proposedoperations to result in adverse hydrologic impacts and for providing commentsand requests for information from permit applicants to address potentialconcerns. The incumbent will also prepare written and oral documentation forthe Permitting Section Chief and the Bureau of Mines Director on his findingsand assessments andmakesrecommendations regarding approval conditional approval or denial of theapplications.

The working conditions of this position may involve:

• Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings.
• Consultations may be performed on coal mining sites outside in inclement weatherwith loud heavy equipment running in the background.
• Exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury.
• The incumbent may be required to walk over rough surfaces and terrain to examine sediment traps stormwater ponds and ditches around heavy moving equipment that presents potentially dangerous conditions.
• Field investigations often require climbing over spoil piles through rock-lined ditches crossing streams etc.
• Use of protective equipment such as hard-hat safety shoes googles gloves mask etc.

The incumbent in this position will be required todrive a State vehicle. If you maintainan out-of-state driving license you must provide a certified copy of yourdriving record for the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time ofappointment. Individuals must maintain a drivers license with no more than 5points on their driving record in order to drive a State vehicle.

Education: A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Geology Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: None.

Note:Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military serviceexperience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as acommissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for- year basis for the required education.

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. When assigned to an environmental program at the Maryland Department of the Environment employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Medical Monitoring Program(MMP) is designed to detect health risks or adverse effects of occupationalexposure to hazardous materials and to direct targeted treatment andoccupational illness/injury prevention strategies. MDE employees who maybe exposed to hazardous materials are required to participate in apre-placement regular and/or post-termination medical examination. MDE has determined that thisposition be part of the MMP; therefore applicants selected for employment mustsuccessfully complete and pass the medical monitoring examinationas a condition of employment. Information regarding the MMP is provided by theMaryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federalOccupational Safety and Health Administration website.

1. Employees in this classification may be required towalk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearingpersonal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject toongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety andHealth Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous WasteOperations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject tocall-in on a twenty-four hour basis and therefore will be required to providethe employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
